Top 10 TV Weddings of All Time

These Weddings Really Knew How to Get Viewers' Attention

Onemargaret
Here is a list of my all time favorite TV weddings. Here, you have drama, comedy, the element of surprise, undying love, deception, and more.

1. Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer

In 1981, at St. Paul's Cathedral, London, England, about 750 million viewers tuned in to watch the heir to the British throne marry Lady Diana Spencer as she walked down the isle in an elegant ivory, silk gown, designed by British couple, David and Elizabeth Emanuel. This "meringue" style gown was enhanced by 10,000 pearls and a mother of pearl sequin, puffed sleeves, and a 25-foot train. Wow! In my opinion, the wedding drew so many viewers because of the allure of royalty and grace. I mean, we're talking about a real-life Prince and Princess here! The ceremony was spectacular! How many times do you get to see a Royal wedding on national television? I enjoyed watching the wedding because it was history in the making! To this day, I still admire the courage, beauty, style, and wisdom of Princess Diana. That's exactly why this is one of the top 10 TV weddings of all time.

2. Luke and Laura on "General Hospital"

Another top 10 TV wedding of all time is the wedding of Luke and Laura. Also, in 1981, this fabulous wedding featured a cameo appearance by legendary screen actress, Elizabeth Taylor. She played the devilish Helena Cassadine. She only came to the wedding to stir up trouble between the bride and groom. Instead Scotty Baldwin, Laura's bitter ex-husband took those honors. He and Luke got into at fist fight, since Luke stole Laura right from under his noise. Pure, drama! That's what I like about "General Hospital." Deservingly, this was daytime's highest-rated wedding. Luke and Laura wed as more than 30 million viewers watched. Through their long suffering caused by the Cassidine family, Frank Smith's mob, and more, they weathered all obstacles and found their way back to each other every time. Talk about true love! This is what I call a true soap opera!

3. David and Donna on "Beverly Hills 90210"

After 10 years of countless breakups, boyfriends, girlfriends, music video shoots, high school drama, The Peach Pit, and college graduation, David Silver and Donna Martin finally came to realize that they belonged together. Thus, in the final season of the show, they decided to become husband and wife. I've watch "Beverly Hills 90210" from its beginning and I think the fans, as well as I, always hoped for a reunion. Even though they had their ups and downs, or they moved onto someone else, they continued to remain close friends. I always found that to be fascinating. During the ceremony, I was touched when David said, "I can't picture a day when I wasn't in love with you." Believe me, that wedding was well worth the wait and worthy of being on my list of the top 10 TV weddings of all time!

4. Mike and Carol on "The Brady Bunch"

This is a story of a lovely lady, a man named Brady, and their Brady bunch, that started with an adventure-filled wedding day. With her three girls and his three boys, this series really took the cake or at least dropped it in Mike Brady's lap. Talk about funny! This show is one of my all-time favorites and one that I grew up with. That's exactly why it's on my list of top 10 TV weddings of all time!

5. Ross and Emily on "Friends"

As Ross Geller tearfully said, "I take thee...Rachel." Oops! His bride's name is Emily, not Rachel Green. I really thought the scene was funny because Ross never got over Rachel after their breakup. Nor did Rachel ever get over Ross. I love "Friends" and, in some ways, I can relate to the trials and tribulations that the characters went through. That's why I choose this show. Well, enough said, the wedding took place anyway, even though the couple ended up breaking up later. Personally, I think Ross and Rachel always belonged together, whether or not they wanted to admit it.

6. Chandler and Monica on "Friends"

At Ross and Emily's wedding, Chandler Bing and Monica Geller finally let go of their insecurities to tie the knot. Prior to this reunion, there were blind dates, one night stands, office place romances, and, of course, Tom Sellick. Well, long story short, Chandler got cold feet, Joey hit on someone, and Rachel discovered she was pregnant. Talk about a season cliffhanger! "Friends" is one of the top 10 TV weddings of all time because it has great actors, good storylines, and slapstick comedy. Not to mention a lifetime of friendships. Did you know "Friends" received a couple of nominations at the Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards show? Go figure!

7. Ryan and Trista on "The Bachelorette"

Trista Rehn became the only successful 'Bachelor' or 'Bachelorette' to actually marry her pick-of-the-litter, fireman and poet, Ryan Sutter. Remember all the kissing and closed bedroom door action with the other eligible contestants. I was surprised that she even picked Ryan. To this day, I still wonder what really went on behind those closed doors. Anyway, the happy couple paid more than $1 million for a lavish affair, which featured more than 30,000 pink and ivory roses. Quite impressive!

8. Luka and Abby on "ER"

Doctors Luka Kovac and Abby Lockhard's long-suffering, off-again, on-again relationship finally took a turn for the better. The beginning of their relationship was doomed when they were attacked by a mugger on their first date, which Luka kills. However, they did stay together for about one year. But, their relationship became more strained after the arrival of Abby's mother and the increasing closeness between Abby and Dr. John Carter. Abby later rekindled her relationship with Luka. For awhile they decided to remain friends, but soon become lovers. Three weeks into their relationship, Abby discovered she was pregnant. Thus, they decided to keep the baby. Through much hesitation, Abby finally agreed to marry Luka, but only after he surprised her with a romantic wedding. Man, what a story! I always liked Luka and I wanted him to get the girl and he did! That's why I chose this wedding as one of the top 10 TV weddings of all time.

9. Susan and Mike on "Desperate Housewives"

Susan Mayer and Mike Delfino finally got married but the road to matrimony was extremely difficult. When Mike moved to Wisteria Lane, he was the "mysterious new neighbor," who soon became Susan's love interest. They would have married sooner but he was hit by Orson Hodge's car on the night he planned to propose. Afterwards, Mark slipped into a deep coma for six months and finally woke up with amnesia. During that time, he had an affair with Edie Britt and Susan had moved on to handsome Englishman, Ian. Now, in the fifth season, the show jumps five years ahead, where Susan and Mike have a five-year-old son and are in the middle of getting a divorce. At least that was the plan, since Susan is having second thoughts. I am still routing for Susan and Mike and I know in my heart they will be a couple just like they're supposed to be. I'm a softie for romance!

10. Gabrielle and Carlos on "Desperate Housewives"

After Gabrielle and Carlos divorced, she married Victor, Fairview's new mayor, and Carlos had an affair with Edie Britt. After the wedding, Gabrielle heard Victor talking to his father about marrying her to help his career. Carlos also discovered that Edie has been taking birth control pills, even though she told him that she wanted to have a baby, too. Thus, Gabrielle dumps Victor and Carlos dumps Edie. Gabrielle rekindles her affair with ex-husband, Carlos. Suddenly, a violate tornado hits Wisteria Lane, killing Victor and blinding Carlos. During this time Gabrielle and Carlos come to realize how much they love each other and they get remarried in Season 4. Well, five years pass, and they now have two daughters, Juanita and Celia and Gabrielle is now a housewife and mother with no upscale social life. Even though Gabrielle and Carlos disagreed on almost everything, I felt, in my heart, that they truly loved each other. That's why I picked their second wedding as one of my top 10 TV weddings of all time.

I've never seen "Desperate Housewives," believe it or not. LOL When it comes to nighttime TV, I'm seriously challenged. Of course I've read about the show and know who's on it. However, when my mother and mother-in-law both were soap addicts. I think Victor and Nikki (The Young and the Restless), Doug and Julie (Days of our Lives), Roman and Marlena (Days of Lives), and Josh and Reva (Guiding Light) had hugely popular weddings. Now, if we talk about Ridge and Brooke or Ridge and Taylor or Nick and anyone (The Bold and the Beautiful), we'd have to ask, "Which one of their weddings?" LOL That's the soap world for you, right? :) I don't think anything will top Charles and Diana's wedding, though. My mother told me she got up at four in the morning, I think, to watch it. Great article, you really have a nice way of describing the weddings. I feel like I attended even if I didn't. :)

I have to disagree on the Luke and Laura wedding. I love Luke and Laura as a couple, but their wedding was not the payoff the viewers deserved. It should have been this big, happy, classic event. Instead we get lines like the bride complaining she is hungry and the guests all chatted about the Cassadines. We deserved more beauty and romance and less folksiness and tackiness.

Great article! I would have listed Prince Charles and Lady Di as #1, too!

I don't understand why Erich Rosenberger needs to nit pick on folks' stories on a regular basis. Yes, I understand two of these weddings were non-fictional, but for a lot of people around the world who only experienced it via television, for them, it IS a TV wedding. The more I read Erich Rosenberger's comments on CPs' stories, the more I see him as the uninvited person who shows up to a party and everyone else secretly wishes he would leave.

good list, though it needs cory and topanga from boy meets world!!!!!

  • Erich Rosenberger M.D.11/7/2008

Interesting, except #1 and #7 were REAL, ACTUAL weddings that happened to be shown on TV. The others were fictional characters on made-up TV shows. Sort of odd to classify Prince Charles and Diana as a "TV Wedding" even though it was aired on TV. Otherwise good list.

I can still remember how people cut classes to watch Luke and Laura get married, seemed crazy at the time. I can't remember a soap opera couple that got such buzz before then. Congrats on being featured :)
