Top 10 Upcoming Movies of 2010
Prince of Persia; Toy Story 3; Tron Legacy; The A-Team; Robin Hood; Iron Man 2; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; And More
10. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Release Date: May 28, 2010 (Trailer)
Prince of Persia as a series has outdone itself, most notably after its critically acclaimed title, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, was released in 2003. Now here is a video game adaptation that might live up to the hype worthy of such a pioneer in platform gaming. The movie will be based on the 2003 game's story and will also have elements from its two sequels - Warrior Within and The Two Thrones.
Prince of Persia: The Stands of Time is hotly anticipated because it will be distributed by Walt Disney and is being directed by Mike Newell (director of Mona Lisa Smile and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Carribean) will be producing and Jake Gyllenhaal will take on the role of Prince Dastan, the hero of the story. It's not often a movie under Disney gets a PG-13 rating. The trailer gives us a good glimpse of what's to come - explosive action, high flying acrobatic stunts, cool special effects (just look at the sand), and a story that will truly live up to the series.
This is not just another video game adaption. It has a high budget and some big names behind it, with the potential to become its own movie franchise.
9. Alice in Wonderland - Release Date: March 5, 2010 (Trailer)
2010 is a great time to re-create this masterpiece of a classic. Alice in Wonderland is the upcoming fantasy-adventure film and only director Tim Burton can do it justice. The movie will not be a remake. It is the sequel to the original and will feature Alice Kingsley at age 19 tumbling down the rabbit hole once more - except this time she doesn't remember having been there in the first place. But she is needed more than ever.
This movie is also under Disney and the cast includes Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, the main antagonist. Will this movie appeal to this generation?
8. The A-Team - Release Date: June 11, 2010 (Trailer)
Another highly wanted classic making a return to theaters. The A-Team will once again follow the crazy adventures of four US soldiers embarking on "soldier-for-hire" missions after escaping from prison for a crime they did not commit. The big surprise here is the cast.
Liam Neeson will play John "Hannibal" Smith. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will take on the role of Mr. T. Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck will be played by Bradley Cooper and Sharlto Copley is Captain H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock. The upcoming action in the movie (as evident in the trailer) seems to be more dramatic than fans would expect and that's the way it should be done. The A-Team will be directed by Joe Carnahan and produced by Ridley and Tony Scott. It will hit the theaters on June 11th, 2010.
7. Tron Legacy - Release Date: December 17, 2010 (Trailer)
Disney has more movies up its sleeve than we expected. Tron Legacy is the direct sequel to the ground-breaking original, Tron, which was released 28 years ago. It's a huge jump the movie industry has made in technology, which is easy to see in the trailer, which showcases the ever popular Light Cycle racing.
And get this: Tron Legacy's movie budget is said to be over $300 million according to the Vancouver Sun. It will feature Garrett Hedlund (Friday Night Lights, Four Brothers) as Sam Flynn, in his search for his missing father. He finds himself pulled into the same 'game' his father had lived in for 25 years. This time the game world is more advanced and unforgiving. The gladiatorial games are even fiercer. The movie will be released in theaters late in 2010 - December 17th.
6. Iron Man 2 - Release Date: May 7, 2010 (Trailer)
Iron Man 2 is the most anticipated upcoming superhero movie of 2010. The first Iron Man was surprisingly good, putting the comic book hero into the mainstream. The reason why fans want to see this movie so badly is because of the way the first ended. How much different will the world be to the Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr., now that everyone knows who's behind the armor?
There are some new additions to the cast, such as Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, and Mickey Rourke. Tony Stark now has to make sure the secrets behind the Iron Man armor aren't revealed to his enemies. The trailer hints how this sequel is just as light-hearted as the first but also quite dramatic. It seems to be the darker sequel, similar to Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back. If one thing is for sure, Iron Man 2 will be harder-hitting in its action sequences.
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I - Release Date: November 19th 2010
The Harry Potter movie franchise is way up there in the industry. The 7th novel has been out for quite a while now and it's time for the epic series to approach its climatic finale. It's long known that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is going to be split into two parts, with each part released separately. It's a challenge but there's no question this upcoming film will break some box office records.
Part I will be released on November 19th, 2010. Both parts will be directed by David Yates (who also directed the previous two films in the series) and written by Steve Kloves. Click here to see a recently released sneak peek.
4. The Last Airbender - Release Date: July 2, 2010 (Trailer)
M. Night Shyamalan is a great director but his recent films were disappointing. This time he chose to go with a completely different approach - a live action adaptation of the acclaimed animated TV series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. The show is considered one of the best cartoons to ever grace Nickelodeon and to see it come to life on the big screen is something people of all ages will appreciate.
The movie will feature spectacular martial arts (as shown in the trailer) and the graphics effects look superb.Slumdog Millionaire fans will be happy knowing Dev Patel is taking on the role of Prince Zuko. The cinematography will be done by Andrew Lesnie, who also directed the photography of Peter Jackon's Lord of the Rings trilogy. No wonder why it looks so epic in scope. The Last Airbender is slated to hit theaters in the summer of 2010.
3. Inception - Release Date: July 16, 2010 (Trailer)
Behold, Inception, the latest movie from Christopher Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight. Does anything more have to be said? Oh yes, Leonardo DiCaprio will be starring as Cobb, the main hero. Little is known about this upcoming movie but it will be heavy into the science fiction genre. Ken Watanabe, Ellen Page, and Cillian Murphy, and others are set to star. Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, The Lion King, Modern Warfare 2) will be composing the score.
The plot? Cobb gets involved in a blackmailing scandal. That's all that's known so far. There's also the fact that the thriller is set within the architecture of Leonardo DiCaprio's character's own mind. How's that for vague? Watch the trailer and it becomes clear why this movie might be 2010's biggest hit.
2. Robin Hood - Release Date: May 14, 2010 (Trailer)
Ridley Scott has another epic movie up his sleeve - another one with Russel Crowe, of course. Robin Hood has been done to death in the film industry but the buzz and anticipation behind this one is promising. The Academy Award winning actor has even stated in an interview: "This has got to be the best [Robin Hood depiction] ever done, otherwise I should be doing something else."
After movies like Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and classics like Blade Runner, it's good to know Ridley Scott was chosen to re-create the legend - for this generation. Will Robin Hood live up to the expectations? The summer of 2010 will decide.
1. Toy Story 3 - Release Date: June 18, 2010 (Trailer)
Toy Story 3 more than deserves the number one spot on the top 10 upcoming movie list. This is possibly Pixar's most ambitious project to date, especially since the original Toy Story is one of the greatest animated movies of all time and its sequel, Toy Story 2, was one of the few sequels in history to exceed the quality of the first.
It has been more than ten years since the last Toy Story movie. What's new in this one? Tom Hanks and Tim Allen will reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively. Andy is now an adult and is going to college. Unfortunately, all the toys are doomed to be put in the attic. Instead, they are thrown away by accident and picked up by the garbage men. Now Woody has to save them all once again, along with a damaged Buzz , who becomes a Spanish version of his old self (when he was a delusional space ranger) after the toys fail to reset him, making matters far more complicated. Fans will like the fact that Pixar is keeping the animation traditional and maintaining the 'feel' of the original.
Pixar's most recent films were WALL-E and Up, both revolutionary in animation and in the message behind the stories. Pixar's name behind this film is enough to know it will be a great addition and a fitting third part to the highly praised series.
Another reason why Toy Story 3 is the number one most anticipated upcoming movie of 2010 - IMAX in 3D.

Post a CommentIron Man was among the best movies I saw in 2009, and although sequels are usually not as good as the originals, I'm looking forward to Iron Man 2.
Interesting list. Thanks!
