Top 10 Valentine's Day Songs for Your Sweetheart
The Best Romantic, Sensual, & Sweet Songs to Hear on Valentine's
10.) Smooth - Santana (feat. Rob Thomas)
Let us begin with one of the most sensual and erotic songs ever written lyrically and musically. You have the great Carlos Santana at guitar playing in his unique melodic and soulful style combined with Rob Thomas' lyrics. He wrote this song for his wife, Marisol Thomas who is of Puerto Rican origin. She was the inspiration behind the lyric "My muñequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa." It is clearly a song of love and deserves to be on every Valentine's Day song list. "Smooth" was at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for twelve consecutive weeks in the summer and fall of 1999. Without question a truly beloved song all-around.
9.) You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine - Lou Rawls
Lyrically, this is an excellent dedication song that exudes a lot of passionate. This beautiful song comes straight from the soul, all the more reason to give to your Valentine. Even though it is an oldie from 1976 it still is timeless. Lou Rawls' smooth, deep vocals make "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" a keeper. It was also his breakthrough hit reaching at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
8.) Can't Take My Eyes Off You - Frankie Valli
This has to be one of my all-time favorite love songs. Once again, here is a song that speaks volumes about dedication and professing their love to a special someone. It was the first of two solo hit songs by Frankie Valli, without the Four Seasons. "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" was released in 1967 and has been covered by numerous artists over the decades. One of those artists in particular was the late Heath Ledger from the film "10 Things I Hate About You". Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons were honored in the Tony Award winning musical from 2006 "Jersey Boys" that documented their years in New Jersey and stellar musical career. Another timeless love song that still remains a classic
7.) I Could Fall in Love - Selena
Now we come to a very haunting song that is exquisitely soulful, yet sad, due in part to this late singer's tragic back story. It was posthumously released after Selena's untimely death in late March 1995 during the month of October. She recorded this song for the long anticipated English-speaking album Selena had wanted to do her entire musical career. That has now been accomplished and "I Could Fall in Love" is a song of yearning, passion, and commitment. A loving ballad that is perfect for slowing things down for a quiet evening.
6.) Happy Together - The Turtles
You've no doubt heard this upbeat song that's been featured in countless films, TV shows, and television commercials for decades. It is a song of sweetness and innocence from a time gone by. You have to love a song like this with its catchy hook. "Happy Together" was released during the incredible 1960's era in 1967 that speaks lyrically of being so infectiously happy when you are with the one you love.
5.) You're the First, the Last, My Everything - Barry White
I love Barry White's deep bass voice that is so sexy during his signature opening monologues within his songs. "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" from 1974 is no exception and has it all for a Barry White song: a sexy opening, great rhythm, and a powerful close. The song title alone clearly tells you it is a devoted love song to their special someone. It would be a sacrilege not to include a Barry White song on any Valentine's Day playlist.
4.) Fallin' - Alicia Keys
When I first heard this intensely sensual song I fell madly in love with it and so will you. Lyrically speaking, it touches on conflicted feelings of love; however, musically "Fallin' " nails it with emotion and sensuality. This is absolutely one very sexy song that was released in 2001. It is considered Alicia Keys signature song. Quite frankly this should be a signature song for Valentine's Day, because it is so realistic about love relationships. It won't always be about emotional highs all the time.
3.) Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye
From 1973 comes a song that is sexually explicit, yet it doesn't cross that line. It is a masterpiece of a song from the great Marvin Gaye who left us much too soon. "Let's Get It On" became one of Motown's most successful singles. It also helped establish Marvin Gaye as a sex icon. The song speaks for itself from its title, lyrical content, and funky instrumentation. A must have song for Valentine's.
2.) Something - The Beatles
One of the most romantic Beatles songs ever composed and recorded. This is my favorite song by The Beatles. To this day whenever I hear it I stop in my tracks. That is how powerful a song it is. The interesting thing is it wasn't written by the famed Lennon/McCartney songwriting team. Instead, it was composed by the "quiet one" himself, George Harrison. For many decades the song was believed to have been written for his then wife, Pattie Boyd as a love song. Harrison stated it was a song he just wrote. Then a music video was made with his wife in it and that is how the story evolved. Nevertheless, it is a very haunting and loving song about not taking a relationship for granted. I would say it is another realistic type love song that was released from the famed Abbey Road album in 1969. Amazing how some songs never become dated or fade away. "Something" is the second most covered Beatles song after "Yesterday". Lyric-wise this is a beautiful love song, pure and simple.
1.) Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
Truly this is one of the most hauntingly beautiful love songs about the passage of time when one is away from their love. It clearly ponders on the question if you will still love me after all this time. Musically, it definitely touches upon one's soul too. "Unchained Melody" is unique in that it was popular during its initial release in 1965 and re-released in 1990 after its prominent inclusion from the hit film "Ghost". In the opening scene from the film the two main characters have the song playing on their vintage jukebox while trying to do pottery and get romantic at the same time. Sadly, it is the only time the couple will be together. This song has been extremely popular over the decades with over 500 cover versions. It has ranked as one of the top romantic songs of all-time. For Valentine's Day be sure to have this one playing for your sweetheart.
Be sure to purchase these timeless songs at amazon.com or at iTunes.com to download. They will be a Valentine's Day gift that's sure to last a lifetime.
