When it comes to goth people have a certain image in their minds. Does that image include gypsy violins, cellos, sarcastic wit, comedy and what is considered old world melodies? From the underground New York goth scene came Voltaire. Voltaire has his roots in European folk; his songs address the loss of love and best ways to see revenge on those who have hurt you. His lyrics, though satirical explore those vulnerable moments, and childish abandon to the cruel moments we have with those who hurt us. Voltaire speaks the thoughts we could never verbalize. Here are a few of his best songs.

Feathery Wings: When you first hear this song its beautiful melody and lyrics take you away. That is until you listen to the lyrics. Many people have said the lyrics refer to committing suicide; or rather trying to protect someone you love from committing suicide. The way he sings it brings beauty to the song. His voice has so much emotion and pain within it as he sings.

Graveyard Picnic: This has to be one of my favorite song by Voltaire. It took me a few times of listening to the song to grasp what he is saying in this song. It is a song about Edgar Allen Poe. Not only does it give reverence to the father of macabre but also to the beauty of silence even if the silence is set in a graveyard. Sometimes we need to honor some of the peope who made an impact in difference areas of art,

Zombie Prostitute: Voltaire stays with his reputation of strange lyrics and disemberment to bring a smile to his audiences. With this song he combines comedy with the macabre. Its hard to not smile when you listen to the lyrics of this song. There is just something wrong about the song, but its hard to not to tap your feet and love the song.

Almost Human: Sometimes we are all treated like we are less than human and this song makes the audience think of those times and what we would like to have said. The chorus: "I'm just like you
made by he despised by they." is as if the audience is telling someone that hurt us that we are human even if sometimes we are treated less than such.

Goodnight Demonslayer: When I first heard this song, I didn't know what to think of it. The more I listened to it, the more I liked it. It's a sweet lullaby giving the child power over the monsters he should met in his dreams. Voltaire's voice is so soothing and relaxing in this song. Voltaire gives his son the ability to face any thing he comes across in and out of his dreams.

When You're Evil: This one starts out as if it would be a soft, slow paced song with the violin. As the song goes on it picks up pace and is another song that makes you want to tap your foot too. Voltaire goes through little things such as tripping grannies down stairs, flies in soup, shadows on walls and so much more for things to be evil or what would make a person evil.

Hell In A Hand Basket: This one is sung to the tune of "The Saints Go Marching In." You cannot help but smile when you listen to the lyrics of this song. It is a simple song that makes you want to dance and smile. From his song we all are going to hell in a hand basket because we all do both good and evil deeds. It is a song that doesn't make you think goth.

Land Of The Dead: This is another song that makes you smile and want to dance to what Voltaire's land of the dead would look like. This song has appeared on a Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy movie. it's a great song about the underworld and makes you think about the creatures that he mentions in the song.

Anastasia: Anastasia is typical song of Voltaire in that it is about the love lost and wanting to find her. There are points when it seems like he doesn't want to be caught missing her or even having a soft side. Some of the lyrics makes the audience wonder if Anastasia just disappeared without and explanation.

Believe: This one when I heard made me think of myself wondering if I served a purpose in someone's life. The more you listen to it you get see that it is another song about love and the lack there of. Its like when someone doesn't want to believe that a relationship is over.

Voltaire is a musician that stands out from the rest. His music is unique and there are times when while you listen to his songs you ask yourself "what the heck" or say "That is so wrong." Voltaire is a singer that once you hear his voice you will be hooked, his lyrics maybe for a certain few. All you have to do is listen to his songs and decide for yourself.
