Making the bedroom a more efficient place involves a number of different decisions. You can approach the project of making the bedroom more functional by following at least a few of these tips.
10. Goodbye Nightstand.
Organizing your bedroom to find more space may mean getting rid of your nightstand or at least replacing it with something much smaller. The typical nightstand chews up more space than a solid set of wall shelves.
9. Turn off the TV For Good
Getting rid of the TV in a bedroom will likely not be a fun decision, but even a flat screen TV still takes up space. If you've got very limited bedroom space and are still dealing with a console TV, getting rid of it will free up a shocking amount of area that can be much better utilized. Besides, watching TV at night only makes the bed seem less like a place for sleeping.
8. Arrangement
The bedroom is likely the place where you get dressed every day. How often do you find yourself traveling from one area of the bedroom to another to get your stuff? Arrange any spot that contains your clothing in the order in which you get dressed. Put underwear and socks in the same chest of drawers. Situate your clothing according to how you put it on next to your underwear and socks drawers. Then ties or hats or belts or whatever accessories you need.
7. Reflection
Invest in a full length mirror and place it against the wall of your bedroom so that you can get a good look at your entire ensemble. If you find yourself heading to the bathroom for a reflection of your upper half and a mirror in the hall to get a gander at the lower half, your bedroom efficiency and functionality is wasted.
6. Reminders
Get a dry erase board and use it as a wall decoration, but more importantly as a functional element that will help you remember things. Technically, you could place a dry erase board for writing reminders anywhere in the house, but the bedroom is the one room where you may not be so busy with other functional aspects that you can take those few moments to catch sight of the board and those reminders you have written.
5. Bed Space
Most people overlook an excellent way to make the bedroom more efficient. Chances are you have space beneath the bed and chances are equally good that dust bunnies are the only inhabitants. Get some plastic bins and fill them with items you don't need all that often. This can even mean out of season clothing items. Use your bedroom as a way to unclutter another room.
4. Paging Mr. Murphy
A more expensive option for achieving peak bedroom efficiency is to get rid of that big bed taking up space and install a Murphy bed that will close up for storage inside the wall. This frees up bedroom space for other uses when the bed is not being utilized.
3. Blinds
Blinds better allow you to control the sunlight coming into the bedroom than curtains or drapes. This can be a very functional choice for the bedroom for getting rid of glare off the TV if you decide to keep it or off the computer screen if you use your bedroom as a home office.
2. Partition
A large bedroom that serves dual purposes will become a more efficient place with the installation of partitions that separate the sleeping area from the home office area. Keep the room open by building a partition wall that comes up to between half the two thirds the height from the floor to the ceiling.
1. Look Up!
The bedroom is filled with unused space that you don't even think about. Snake a shelf along the wall about a foot and a half from the ceiling and instantly you've got a place to keep dozens if not hundreds of books. These shelves could also be used for storing clothing that you only wear on certain occasions. The space that exists between your head and the ceiling of your bedroom is there to take full advantage on its way to making your bedroom more efficient and functional.
