Top 10 New Years Resolutions for a Sports Fan!

Erin Morris
The New Year is always a time of beginnings. No matter what type of person you are or what your habits may be, if you've ever felt that its time for a change, there's no better time than on New Years Day. I've decided to dedicate my top 10 New Years Resolutions to sports fans. It can be very difficult to be a dedicated sports fan; oftentimes we develop habits that aren't all that great, but it's in the spirit of supporting our team right?

So in the spirit of the New Year, here are some resolutions that many (or all) sports fans might want to think about.

10. Get over the Fantasy
Now I know a lot of you may be shaking your head right now...but seriously. I can understand the draw of being in a fantasy pool, but it takes the fun out of rooting for your favorite team. Instead you're running into the computer room every five minutes to see if you're points have changed, you're rooting for one teams' defense and another teams quarter back and still another teams running back or special teams or whatever...it just gets to the point where you want to say...enough is enough! I know not many will agree with me on this...but all I have to say is that the meticulous calculations of fantasy leagues are turning dumb jocks into nerds. A round of dungeons and dragons anyone? Get off the computer and grab a beer. The game is on!

9. Put Down The Hot Dog!
Just Do It!

8. Purchase NHL Center Ice
If you have an HD television and you aren't watching hockey games in HD...you are seriously missing out. Go straight home and sign up for NHL Center Ice and watch all of your hockey games in HD. The picture is absolutely sick. There is no better way to watch hockey.

7. Stop Being the Coach and Start Being the Player
We've all done it! (I know I have!) You sit on your plushy couch eating your chips and drinking your beer and you incessantly scream at the TV screen because of the lousy decisions that your team makes. Sometimes as sports fans we forget how easy it is to say 'I told you so' and how hard it is to actually make the play. So get out there this New Year and actually play some of these games you are so fond of. Next time you watch you won't be so quick to call them out on plays.

6. Scream Anyway
They should make the play...they're getting paid right? But you should still go outside and play. Exercise = good.

5. Root Root Root for the Home Team!
I can't even say how many times I've been to a professional sports game and the fans are booing the home team. Even if your team stinks, I say make a resolution to cheer for them anyway. Everyone needs a pick-me-up...and booing them isn't going to help. Either be a fan or don't be! No more Booing! (unless you're a SF Giants fan...Barry Bonds can kiss my a$$!)

4. Buy a Patriots Jersey
I think its time to admit that they're goin' to the 'ship (again). Time to jump on the bandwagon.

3. Don't Break The Plasma!
I say this only because I've actually seen this happen before. Have you ever seen one of those 'bad call bricks' before? You know those foam bricks that you can throw at the TV instead of throwing heavy objects at the TV when you get upset over a game? Well I say we resolve to not throw ANYTHING at the TV because apparently when you're TV stand isn't quite as steady as you thought it was and you throw a bad call brick at the TV, it will fall over and die a horrible horrible death. Yeah...

2. Open Up Your Eyes - The Yanks are Old News
You do have to admit that the Yankees have definitely lived up to the old adage 'money doesn't buy happiness' All they have are a bunch of over paid superstars who don't know how to play well together. So Yanks fans, its time to resolve to get off your high horse and join the rest of us baseball fans whose teams don't make it all the way every year. All I have to say is...have fun paying that A-Rod bill...and we'll see you next year in the playoffs! (Can you tell I'm a Boston fan!!)

1. Adopt a Dog and Don't Take Steroids
If there's one lesson we've learned from pro sports players this past year is that you can't count on them to be role models any longer. Gone are the days when your children can look up to sports heroes. But if you play your cards right, they just might pick you as a hero instead. How you might ask? Buy your kid a dog and tell them if they ever take steroids they are going straight to Hell! Oh and take them outside and play with them. The best thing about sports is sharing your passion for them!

So that's my list! Take it or leave it, agree with it or don't! But no matter what you think, know that I wish you and all your favorite sports teams the best of luck in 2008(except the Yanks of course!). Play to win! Happy New Years!

I knew the Yanks were old news once they stopped winning pennants and still burnt their wallets. And half of the team was on 'roids when they beat the Mets in 2000.....hey, maybe they should give back their WS rings while they're at it.

I can still throw things at the TV because we have not stepped into the new Millenium yet--I do have a resolution to do that in the new year though.

That was funny, and yet sadly true. If someone broke our TV I think my husband would have to be seriously restrained.

LOL at the Yanks and Bonds comments. (Though I do have to point out that Bonds isn't a Giant anymore. :) )
