Top 10 New Years Resolutions for Tech Support Call Centers

A Reality Check for Geeks

Donna Porter
Tech support: bane to some, digital savior to others. For the average computer user though, you geeky guys and gals make us see red. After 20 minutes of pressing phone key pads and listening to a Barry Manilow remix, finally you answer the call, but often not our questions.

Tech support call centers, we also empathize with you, so following are some New Years Resolutions to do us both some good.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #10

Learn Patience: Devote some time to a senior facility or watch water reach boiling temperature on the stove, whatever it takes. This will keep your and your customers blood pressure in check.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #9

Get Humble: Go to a presentation on Quantum Physics or a crochet class. Does it sound like Mandarin Chinese? Good. You know where your customers are coming from.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #8

K.I.S.S.: Keep it simple silly, you're talking to people who think WiFi is a rock band.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #7

Take Frequent Breaks: Yes, you tech support people deal with some mighty challenged folks, ones who think an unplugged monitor is broken. Find a mantra, get some decaf, just don't take out your frustration on the next customer.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #6

Learn Gratitude: Without computer challenged people you would be out of a job.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #5

Nix the Starbucks: Whatever your country of origin you speak at 2.8 Gz. while customers process at 640K. Often instructions are slow going because the computer is busted and dragging in the first place.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #4

Make Non-Tech Friends: If your world is all about bits and bytes, how can you relate to mere humans? If the company bores you, you can always try dinner and a movie. No conversation needed as you absorb some real life culture.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #3

Stand Up to Your Boss: Explain that ridiculous time quotas, rules against humor and empathy, and under-staffing cause problems for the company, tech support and customers. Then look for a new job.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #2

Install Vista on Your Home computer. No explanation needed.

New Years Resolutions for Tech Support #1

Speak English to English Customers: Maybe India has more dedicated workers, tech savvy counterparts or just work on the cheap. No begrudging your country of origin, but if your directions sound like a recipe for couscous, we have a problem.

This piece is hilarious! Also great advice...since when did a bunch of geeks have supreme power over the general public? I think we will be seeing more and more of that as this tech world explodes.

LOL coming from a professional tech support engineer ;) these are great!! I like the India one a lot. We get LOTS of complaints from customers who are so thrilled to finally have an English speaking rep. LOL funny read :)

Funny...I should send this to our tech support dept!

Donna: I was trying to figure out what #1 would be, and I said out loud, "Speak English!!!!!", and much to my delight that is what you chose. How frustrating is it, to not be able to understand a word someone says about things that you already know too little about? (That wasn't all that clear either, was it???) LOL@myself... LOL@Charlie!!!!!! Too funny! Love it!

    Funny and on point!

Creative topic! I seldom need tech support, and haven't had any bad personal experiences, but perhaps some misinformed advice...
