Top 10 New Year's Songs
SHeDaisy, Relient K, Yo-Yo Ma, Celine Dion and Others Make the New Year Songs List
1. "Auld Lang Syne" by Relient K
Relient K has been a favorite of alternative music fans who enjoy their humorous and sometimes sarcastic take on lyrics. However, you will be most pleased with their beautifully harmonized version of the old classic New Year song, "Auld Lang Syne."
2. "Brand New Year (My Revolution)" by SHeDaisy
The sisters of the country trio, SHeDaisy, offer a bright and hopeful anthem of resolution in the song, "Brand New Year (My Revolution.)" The upbeat tempo and words claiming, "It's never been so clear/Second chance is what got me here/To live, to love today/'Cause it's a brand new year" offer the listener a great way to start 2009.
3. "Seasons of Love" by Cast of RENT (movie soundtrack)
"Five hundred, twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes/how do you measure a year in the life?" Powerhouse vocals by Tracie Tomas will give you the chills and the words and beautiful harmonies give you a chance to reflect on the past year.
4. "Nothin' New for the New Year" by Harry Connick, Jr. and George Jones
If you want to keep your playlist upbeat, you may not want to include this one. But it should not be left out entirely as two vocal greats, Harry Connick, Jr. and George Jones, sing the weepy blues of a lost love.
5. "Funky New Year" by the Eagles
Classic rock n' roll fans must include the Eagles' sloshed version of "Funky New Year" for their holiday list. Which begs the question, "What year is this anyway?"
6. "New Year" by Charlie Hall
The worship leader's style shines brightly in this inspirational song of praise. "This is a new year/this is a new day to rise, shine, lift up your eyes."
7. "New Year" by The Beautiful Republic
With melodies reminiscent of Sixpence None the Richer, this new Christian quintet offers a hopeful and beautifully harmonized New Year song.
8. "Another Year Has Gone By" by Céline Dion
"Another year has gone by/And I'm still the one by your side/After everything that's gone by/There's still no one saying goodbye/Though another year has gone by." Dion offers a romantic reflection for couples who may have had a turbulent past year.
9. "My! My! Time Flies" by Enya
Enya has been on the music scene for more than twenty years and yet her first holiday album arrived in stores just a month ago. Her up tempo song, "My! My! Time Flies" is a great reminder of how quickly 2008 went by.
10. "Dona Nobis Pacem (Give Us Peace)/Auld Lang Syne" by Yo-Yo Ma
No one but the classic cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, can so sweetly marry "Dona Nobis Pacem" with "Auld Lang Syne." It is the perfect way to end one year and begin another: a reflection on the past and a prayer of peace for the future.
