Now let's get to the food. As a base for your desired entrees, you have a selection of either lo mein or vegetable fried rice. Out of the two, I would have to say the lo mein took first place leaving the rice at a close second. The lo mein had a great texture and perfect flavor. Usually when I order lo mein, it is oily and flavorless. This was not the case. The lo mein complimented my entrees perfectly with just enough flavor to be eaten alone, but not too much that it overshadowed the rest of the dish. Next, there was the General Tso's Chicken. As far as the chicken goes, there were fresh, large chunks of tender white meat. As far as the flavor, it was pretty good. The chicken was definitely flavorful, but could have had a bit more kick to it. I'm not saying it needed to be extremely spicy, but it could have been taken to the next level.
There was also the honey chicken. Surprisingly, the honey chicken had a tad bit too much honey. I think that the flavor could have been balanced with a touch of spice. It tasted as if the chicken was put straight into a vat of honey and then right onto the buffet table. If you aren't a fan of sweet, I'd steer far away from the honey chicken. So did the sweet and sour chicken measure up to the General Tso's? The actual fried bits of chicken were pretty good alone. But when it came to the sauce, it was a dip I did regret. The sweet and sour sauce didn't taste the way I thought it would. Maybe it varies from place to place but the taste started out kind of strange.
What about the veggies you ask? The broccoli was fresh and not over cooked. It blended perfectly with the lo mein and General Tso's. It was a delicious trio that I would try again and again. But when it came to the green beans, I was a little disappointed. They were okay when it came to flavor but I feel like they could have been cooked a little longer to enhance the texture of the bean. Some of the other dishes such as the dumplings, egg rolls and fried cheese sticks were pretty good. They served as tasty additions to the main entrees but nothing extraordinary. Now there are a lot more dishes to try at the buffet including tons of different sushi, seafood, soups, and desserts.
As far as the service goes, I would have to say that it was good. We did have to wait for anything and our drinks were refilled as needed. The staff made sure to clear away any unused plates after making sure that we were actually finished with them. That is one thing that I would have to say is a big turn off for me at many buffets. It can get rather annoying when your plate gets taken away before you are finished with it. After the conclusion of the meal, the check was brought out promptly. The place was kept very clean and tidy with no sign of any health hazards areas. Overall, the Happy Rose Buffet definitely deserves to be on the Top 100 Chinese Restaurant List and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a comfortable atmosphere, quality food, and fine service all for a good price.

Post a CommentThe Happy Rose has pretty good sushi, especially for a buffet. What's up with the pink exterior though!!
Good review. I did notice that many of the Chinese Buffet restaurants in the USA tend to serve the same dishes, different ones to those you find in the UK or other countries. The sauces and flavors are also different in the USA, often more bland, maybe to satisfy the American taste rather than being more traditional. Sweet and Sour sauce does seem to vary from place to place enormously, being anywhere from really good to disgusting. I think like many Chinese restaurants, you eat at different ones for different dishes that they do best.
