God Bless America

I am a United States Air Force Veteran, born in the 1950s, making me a baby boomer patriotic hippy. Nevertheless, listening to patriotic music for me is like Christians listening to gospel music. I am Christian, too, so you get what I mean. Patriotic songs pierce your heart, sometimes with pride and sometimes with sorrow. Patriotic songs bring chills to your spine. Patriotic songs give us hope that our loved ones will return home safely. Patriotic songs remind us that sometimes they don't.

I never forget to listen to at least one patriotic song each day to remind me how lucky we are to live in America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. I pray to God every day to protect our fighting men and women, and to take care of those families whose loved ones gave their life for me to be free. I pray to God to help the disabled Veterans who are suffering after paying a price for our country.

Patriotism is a favorite theme for all musicians and singer/songwriters. Classic patriotic songs are covered by musicians across all genres. If I had to name a favorite it would have to be God Bless America by Kate Smith. Contemporary patriotic songs are recorded when events like 9/11 threaten our freedom and our country needs to know that "united we stand, divided we fall." Here are my Top 100 favorite patriotic songs on my MP3 playlist. Feel free to share your favorites, too. God Bless America!

"This Land Is Your Land" is definitely not a patriotic song, and never was meant to be. It is an anti-capitalist, anti-private property protest song written by communist sympathizer Woody Guthrie, Arlo's father. He originally wrote it during the Depression years as a parody of "God Bless America," which he despised. To call it a patriotic song is blasphemy, even though it is thought of as that. It is a sneaky progressive anthem full of double entendres that veils itself in patriotism, but every liberal knows exactly what it means. Look up all the lyrics and see for yourself. The joke has been on you all along.
