Top 13 Upcoming Horror Movies of 2011

Check out the top 13 horror movies of 2011. Whether you like ghosts, vampires, or horror movies based on true stories, you're sure to find some upcoming horror movies of 2011 here full of enough fear to haunt you all year:

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - This is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming horror movies of 2011, and the only one here that doesn't have a release date just yet. However, the sooner we get to see writer/producer Guillermo del Toro's latest, the better. Guy Pearce plays a father whose young daughter is sent to live with him and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes). Unfortunately, there are creatures in the house that want to claim the little girl (Bailee Madison) as one of their own. Hopefully Guillermo has created some imaginative creatures like those we saw in "Pan's Labyrinth" (but more terrifying, of course) as he returns to writing horror screenplays, and the trailer does look promising for this modern "Poltergeist".

Mother's Day - What better way to celebrate your love for your dear ol' mum that with one of the best upcoming horror movies of 2011? Of course it's one of the many remakes on this list, but it's also one of the few horror movies of 2011 without supernatural elements involved: a mother helps her sons escape from the law and terrorizes the new inhabitants of the house she lost in a foreclosure. So if you're more spooked by somewhat realistic horror movies, check this one out on April 1, 2011.

Scream 4 - Many of the upcoming horror movies of 2011 are sequels or remakes, but this is one that is getting quite a bit of buzz. Ghostface Killer experts Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell are joined by fresh pretty faces/potential victims Hayden Panettiere, Emma Roberts, and Alison Brie. So will the new young cast members have a new generation studying the rules of horror movies? It's hard to say, but if you like scary movies, this is one of the upcoming frightful films of 2011 that might be worth checking out on April 15, 2011.

Priest - For those longing for the days when vampires were terrifying creatures of the night feeding on fear, this is one of the must-see upcoming horror movies of the year. Paul Bettany stars as a creepy-looking warrior priest trying to track down the vampires that kidnapped his niece (Lily Collins), along with the help of her boyfriend (Cam Gigandet) and a warrior priestess (Maggie Q). Don't miss all of the vampire violence (in 3D!) on May 13, 2011.

Fright Night - Here's another of the upcoming horror movie remakes of 2011, but one that doesn't bug me too much (the original "Fright Night" was all right, but nothing to get upset about a remake over). The horror/comedy stars Colin Farrell as the vampire next door whose existence is threatened when his high school horror movie fan neighbor discovers his secret. There's always the possibility that this one could be better than the original, and gals with "Twilight" burnout will surely enjoy meeting this year's new bloodsucking heartthrob on August 19, 2011.

The Apparition - Speaking of "Twilight" stars, the lovely Ashley Greene teams up with "Harry Potter" alum Tom Fulton in one of the upcoming horror movies of 2011 featuring spirits behaving badly. And since there are so many ghost movies in the works, this one is taking the spot of "Paranormal Activity 3" on this list (I was tired of that franchise after the first film). The ghost here is conjured during a parapsychology experiment gone wrong, and Tom Felton plays an expert in the supernatural that might be able to stop it. It might not sound all that original, but Ashley Green eye candy and Draco Malfoy's first post-Potter role make it worth a viewing when it hits theaters on September 9, 2011.

Piranha 3DD - If prehistoric beasts, breasts, and buckets of blood are your thing, check this one out on September 16, 2011.

Dream House - This is another of the upcoming horror movies of 2011 about a haunted house, and it could be one of the best if you base that assumption on the cast, which includes Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, and Rachel Weisz. Craig and Weisz play a couple that move into a house where a grisly murder took place, unbeknownst to them, while Naomi Watts plays a neighbor close to the family that died. They ultimately discover that history might repeat itself in this "dream house", and suspense ensues. Again, it doesn't seem like a terribly original plot, but good acting, writing, and direction could help make it a hit on September 30, 2011.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters - And now for something completely different. Sometime during the month of Halloween, we will be treated to this horror/comedy hybrid about what happened to Hansel and Gretel when they became older: they became witch hunters, of course! Not much is known beyond the simple plot and who will be playing the duo, Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, but this is one of the upcoming horror movies of 2011 that it's very easy to look forward to.

The Thing - If this was a remake of John Carpenter's remake, I wouldn't have put it on this list, but I'll give it chance since it purports to actually be a prequel (plus Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in it, fanboys). So give it a chance and see if this movie about a previously-frozen creature terrorizing members of a scientific expedition in Antarctica is even half as good October 14, 2011.

Red State - Kevin Smith turns the WBC into something horrifying on October 19, 2011 when a group of teens looking for sex instead find a group of religious nuts. This is one of the upcoming horror movies of 2011 that I'm most looking forward to, so hopefully it lives up to the hype.

Dibbuk Box - And another of the upcoming movies of 2011 that will be in theaters for Halloween purports to be based on the true story of a haunted/cursed box that was sold on eBay. I'm not sure about this one, but the true story aspect of it will likely draw viewers on October 28, 2011.

11-11-11 - "On 11:11 on the 11th day of the 11th month, the 11th gate of Heaven will open up and something from another world will enter the earthly realm." So what will the beastie be, and what kind of havoc will it wreak on Earth? Find out on November 11, 2011 (of course).

So from fish and frightening apparitions to murderous mothers and villainous vampires, keep yourself shivering all year long with the upcoming horror movies of 2011 on this list.
