Top 20 Christmas Songs for the Holidays

Mark Shore
Is it almost that time of the year already? Guess so! It's time to bust out the Christmas tunes again. But which ones? I have chosen the top 20 Christmas songs which will put you on Santa's 'good boy' list. I may have been born in 1986, but there is something about those old 30s / 40s Christmas songs that do a better job of warming the heart than the newer music we have in our modern era. For some of our Christmas song CD, we'll be using the very old, classic, originals. I believe this is what people are really looking for - and what they like best.

20. Carol of the Bells

This is one of my personal favorites. It may be short, but it just sounds darn cool. There are many different versions out there. Might be a great way to start off your CD track! (listen here)

19. You're a Mean One Mr Grinch

Mr. Grrrrrrrr INCH! This will be good for the kids, or good for a little giggle towards the end of your CD. (listen here)

18. The Hanukkah Song by Adam Sandler

A funny song. Even though you may not be Jewish, it's still catchy. Heke, you hear it on the radio just about every year, so why not? (listen here)

17. Oh Christmas Tree

Sometimes it's nice to have a song in there without any lyrics. Generally relaxing. (listen here)

16. Let It Snow by Frank Sinatra

Ohhh... snow... It can be a blessing and a nightmare. Luckily we have Frank Sinatra to remind us that snow isn't all that bad. It has its ups and downs... And the occasional freak accident... But don't we all get a little excited at the first sight of snow during the new season? (listen here)

15. Rockin Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee

You can't exclude this from your CD. Who doesn't rock around their Christmas tree holding a broomstick as a guitar and dancing around in your underwear? I don't. (listen here)

14. Jingle Bells by Diana Krall

Diana Krall will spice up your bells with this song. She will even jingle them for you. She also makes tasty sandwiches and cuts off the crust. Sorry feminists. (listen here)

13. We Wish You a Merry Christmas

There are many versions of this song out there. A popular one seems to be by Enya. Personally I think it sounds a bit creepy. (listen here)

12. All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey

Can you believe it? A modern day Christmas song that has really taken a stand beside the old time classics. This seems to be a favorite amongst many people. (listen here)

11. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas by Judy Garland

Now we're getting into the good stuff. The cream of the crop. This is an enjoyable little song for the film Meet Me In St. Louis. You can enjoy the video I include in the 'listen here' link. Also, what's up with the little girl starring blankly at her face? That creep. (listen here)

10. Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town by Bruce Springsteen

A little something for the Springsteen fans. (listen here)

9. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer by Gene Autry

It's for the kids. They remember this darn song by heart and will likely sing along to it if you encourage them to. (listen here)

8. Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms

Snowin' and Blowin'. Sounds like a bored wife. This is one of the well known traditional Christmas songs. So, you have to include it or else you'll be considered a total weirdo. (listen here)

7. Frosty the Snowman by Jimmy Durante

If it's one song that makes you feel like your about to explode with warm fuzzy feelings, perhaps it is this one. Jimmy Durante's voice brings so much "YAY!" to this song that it cannot be described. He sounds happy. Too happy. (listen here)

6. Silver Bells by Johnny Mathis

Ohhhh.. it's just so pretty to listen to. Everyone loves Silver Bells. (listen here)

5. It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas by Perry Como

It's not looking a lot like Christmas yet, but we're getting there. Better get this one on your CD. (listen here)

4. Here Comes Santa Claus by Elvis Presley

Elvis has done numerous Christmas songs, but this is one of the fan favorites. You'll definitely cheer up the room with this one - and possibly give children a heart attack because of the excitement this song will bring. (listen here)

3. Silent Night by Elvis Presley

It's rare to find a good version of Silent Night - without it sounding too goofy. Fortunately, Elvis Presley and his incredible talent solves that problem wonderfully. This is the best version, especially if you have older relatives around - it brings back those old time memories. (listen here)

2. The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole

Santa wouldn't leave this one off his list and if he ever did, his helper elves would probably beat him up. Don't say I didn't warn you, if you don't include this song in your collection, they will fly down from the North Pole and throw you in busy traffic. (listen here)

1. White Christmas by Bing Crosby

Could you really find a better Christmas song to finish off your CD? This is probably best to listen to when you're alone with a loved one, with the fireplace lit up. Just... remember... another baby = more money to spend next Christmas year. Don't get any funny ideas. (listen here)

Anyway, that is the Christmas music list. I hope you find this article useful! Be sure to tell me what you think.

And as always, have a merry Christmas! (when that time does come).
