Top 20 Football Movies; Best Sports Films of All-Time

Michael Luchies
Here is my list of the top 20 football movies of all-time (non-documentary)
I do tend to value movies based on true stories higher than fiction movies.
Note: I do not consider Jerry Maguire a football movie

#20. Wildcats
Not a Goldie Hawn fan, but Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson help make this movie watchable...That and you'll get some solid laughs out of it.

#19. The Best of Times
Robin Williams and Kurt Russell play one more game thanks to Willams' dirty antics.

#18. The Replacements
A different take on a sports comedy movie, definitely worth watching even though Keanu Reeves is in it.

#17. Necessary Roughness
Not what I would call a great movie overall, but a funny and entertaining football movie that is worthy of being #17 on the list.

#16. Any Given Sunday
An overrated football movie, but brings something new to the table and is fun to watch.

#15. The Last Boyscout
One of my favorite movies. Although the actual football action is low, I would still consider this a "football movie" due to the involvement of a football teams owner, and Damon Wayans the ex-quarterback of the football team in the movie involved.

#14. Waterboy
A big comedy in its day, still an entertaining watch.

#13. The Junction Boys
A very good made for TV movie about legendary Bear Bryant.

#12. The Express
A great movie based on Ernie Davis, the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.

#11. Radio
Cuba Gooding Jr. plays a mentally challenged man who loves the game of football. Ed Harris plays a high school coach who takes in Radio and gets him into high school. This movie is based on a true story.

#10. North Dallas Forty
Nick Nolte is a wide receiver (funny thought by itself), who goes after the management of the team. Nolte isn't a believable wide receiver, but was still born for this role.

#9. We Are Marshall
A Much better movie than I had expected, and another decent true story on the silver screen.

#8. The Program
One of the most entertaining football movies on this entire list with plenty of great lines "You'll never be half the man yo momma was".

#7. Invincible
A surprisingly great adaptation of a true story into a movie. This is a great film for any true football fan, from Philadelphia or not.

#6. All The Right Moves
Possibly a little too corny to make the top ten, but it's an 80's movie with Tom Cruise, so it's to be expected. Cruise plays a high school senior who wants a college scholarship so he can further his education and stop the trend of his family working for a local steel mill.

#5. Friday Night Lights
I never pictured Billy Bob Thornton as a High School football coach, but after watching Friday Night Lights I can see it. High school football in Texas is just as good as this movie.

#4. Remember the Titans
Denzel delivers a brilliant performance as the coach of a newly unsegregated football team.

#3. The Longest Yard (1974)
The remake wasn't bad, but you can't beat the original. Burt Reynolds delivers in his prime an instant classic football film.

#2. Rudy
Based on a true story of an undersized football player with a larger than life heart. Rudy fulfills his dream of playing football for the University of Notre Dame.

#1. Brian's Song (1971)
Sports movies based on true stories are easier to connect with. Brian's Song brings tears to every sports fans eyes.
