Top 25 Halloween Songs

Aida Ekberg
If you're looking for some great songs to put you in the Halloween spooky spirit or some great music to play at your Halloween party in your newly-haunted house, try some of the great songs on this list. Some are Halloween classics that are great for dancing to at a party or listening to in the car while you take the kids trick-or-treating, and some are spooky enough to use as haunted house music. But whatever you want to use them for, these great songs are perfect for a night of fright and fun:

'Clap for the Wolfman' by The Guess Who - Some of my favorite songs about Halloween mention wolves, and this is one of them. But this song isn't talking about the Wolfman of horror movie fame, it's talking about a legendary music man named Wolfman Jack. However, the soundbites used from the Wolfman in one of the best Halloween songs that's actually not about monsters could make you think he's got a bit of werewolf in him; his spooky voice would be great coming from a groovy, hairy monster in a haunted house.

'Werewolves of London' by Warren Zevon - This is one of the most fun Halloween songs on this list, with great piano music and a comical take on the classic Halloween monsters. It's way too upbeat for haunted house music, but you gotta love the lyrics that have werewolves enjoying Chinese food and drinking pina coladas.

'Sweet Dreams' by Marilyn Manson - Just about any of Marilyn Manson's music has a Halloween feel to it, but I really love his take on the Eurhythmics' classic. It's one of the scariest songs on this list sung by the most frightening musician you'll ever see, and it would make great haunted house music for a spookier haunted house aimed at an older audience.

'Paint it Black' by the Rolling Stones - This is one of my favorite Rolling Stones' songs, and a great tribute to one of the colors of Halloween. The music is upbeat but dark at the same time, making it perfect for a Halloween party.

'The Devil Went Down to Georgia' by Charlie Daniels Band - You'll see a lot of people dressed like Johnny's foe in this fun song on Halloween, but I doubt any of them can play a fiddle like him. It's one of the few country songs out there that are perfect for Halloween, as well as one featuring fiddle music that doesn't sound terrifying and screechy.

'Black Magic Woman' by Santana - If you're dressing up like a black magic woman for your Halloween party, then this is one the songs you must have on your playlist. It's perfect music for all of the ghouls and gals to slow-dance too.

'Fear the Reaper' by Blue Oyster Cult - Don't fear the reaper on Halloween; after all, he's probably just some guy wearing a Halloween costume. This is one of the songs on this list that has a spooky, mellow feel to it that makes it perfect romantic Halloween music.

'Night on Disco Mountain' by David Shire - This great music from the 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack takes some spooky classical music and funks it up a bit to create this amazing piece. It's perfect party music, and would be great to play in a slightly funky haunted house.

'Thriller' by Michael Jackson - It's not Halloween without one of Michael Jackson's best songs. Practice your best thriller dance, and have fun trying to look like a zombie to this Halloween hit.

'Black Sabbath' by Black Sabbath - This is one of the songs that changed music; without it, the band Black Sabbath might not be the dark legend that it has become today. It's one of those songs that will give you chills, combining Ozzy's unique voice with a riff known as diabolus in musica, said to have satanic connotations. It's great music for a haunted house, and I wouldn't listen to it alone.

'Witchy Woman' by The Eagles - There will be a lot of witches lurking about on Halloween, so this is one of the sexy songs that's perfect to play at your Halloween party just for them.

'Living Dead Girl' by Rob Zombie - The guy's got "zombie" in his name, so of course his songs will be perfect Halloween fare. Some of his music would be great for a haunted house, and this one will describe a lot of undead-looking women walking among the living on Halloween.

'Zombie' by The Cranberries - And for an ode to the zombie, this is one of my favorite Halloween songs from the 90's. You gotta love frontwoman Dolores O'Riordan's other-worldly voice, and this is great music to rock out to at your Halloween Party.

'Possum Kingdom' by The Toadies - Do you enjoy spooky stories? Then you might like this controversial song by The Toadies. Is it about a serial killer, a ghost, or a vampire? Toadies fans love to debate this, but this is another of the Halloween songs on this list that's just fun to listen to because of the great music regardless of what it's about.

'The Beautiful People' by Marilyn Manson - Since there won't be too many people trying to look beautiful wandering around on Halloween, Marilyn Manson's frightening attack on them is one of the songs that's perfect for celebrating the holiday. His voice and the gothic rock music also make it a perfect haunted house song.

'I Put a Spell on You' by Screamin' Jay Hawkins - Screamin' Jay lets out more than a few bizarre screams in this great piece of unique music, along with some very spooky and psychotic-sounding laughter. It's one of my favorite songs on this list, and one that's full of voodoo magic.

Le Freak by 'Chic' - This is one of the best Halloween party songs on this list, and one that's perfect for freaks to freak out to.

Super Freak by 'Rick James' - And for another song about freaks, this one is just for the ladies. I just love Rick James, and this song isn't just freaky; it's super freaky.

'The Monster Mash' by Bobby "Boris" Pickett - This is one of those Halloween songs that you might hear a little too much around the holiday, but Bobby "Boris" Pickett's spooky voice is pretty fun to listen to. Play it at your Halloween party, and enjoy seeing everyone's take on 'The Monster Mash'.

'Sympathy for the Devil' by The Rolling Stones - He's just asking for a little appreciation this one night! Rolling Stones' songs make this list twice with their plea from the big guy downstairs, and while you might not want to show him any sympathy, it is fun to listen to him plead his case.

'Feed My Frankenstein' by Alice Cooper - If you're looking for hardcore rock songs for your Halloween party, then this hit by one of the kings of darkness is perfect. He may not be taking about Dr. Frankenstein's monster, but this song still has a great Halloween vibe.

'The Phantom of the Opera' from 'The Phantom of the Opera' movie soundtrack (by Andrew Lloyd Weber) - Some of the music from 'The Phantom of the Opera' soundtrack would be great for a haunted house, and I absolutely love this theme from the movie. It has great spooky music that's perefect for setting the mood at a Halloween party, and it might make you believe there really is a phantom hiding out somewhere in your haunted house.

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach - The title of this music may not sound familiar to you, but look it up on YouTube, and you'll recognize it immediately. It's the music you always hear played in horror movies over an outside view of a haunted house, and it has been used in cartoons, television series, and all sorts of other places to create a spooky atmosphere. It's great organ music for a haunted house, and it's something a little different from the other Halloween songs on this list.

'Spiderwebs' by No Doubt - Spiderwebs make great Halloween decorations as well as a great 'No Doubt' songs. Gwen Stefani may not be singing the praises of these amazing creations of spiders, but this funky song makes perfect Halloween party music.

'Boris the Spider' by The Who - And this song pays tribute to the creators of the aforementioned sticky and macabre living quarters. The creepy crawly chorus to one of the most popular Halloween songs might leave your skin feeling the same way.

If you're looking for more haunted house music, I'd recommend that you try soundtracks to spooky horror movies like 'The Exorcist', 'Halloween', 'Suspiria', and 'Psycho'. Along with the great songs on this list, they would create the perfect mood for your Halloween party or haunted house, allowing you to alternately be frightened and have fun all Halloween night long.
