Top 3 Beaches for Families in New York

New York City is Home to Many Beaches

Cassandra James
Many people who think about New York City don't really equate it with beaches. Yet New York has some of the best beaches in the country. With many beaches to pick from, it can sometimes be hard to choose, and even more so if you have kids. Here are three of the best beaches in New York City especially if you're a family with children.

Coney Island Beach. As much as Coney Island is a bit rundown, it's still a fun beach for kids. Coney Island is in Brooklyn and its beach stretches for almost two and a half miles. Here your kids can play on the sand, paddle in the ocean then, when they get bored, head onto the boardwalk and see all the sights there are too. Amusement rides, roller coasters, food shops and the New York Aquarium - all accessible from here.

Rogers Beach. Rogers Beach is at the town of Westhampton Beach in the Hamptons. It's a very popular public beach as it's clean, has rest rooms, showers, a snack bar and a lifeguard. The ocean is calm too so it's a safe place for families with children, and it's a short walk into Westhampton Beach for restaurants, shops or to buy beach supplies for the kids. Rogers Beach is laid back and you'll find plenty of other families with children that your kids can play with.

Wolfe's Pond Beach. On Staten Island, this beach is amazing if your kids love nature. Here they can see geese, sandpipers, clams, blue crabs and periwinkles. Quahog clam shells can also be found. Used by Native Americans to make beads, it could be a fun thing for your kids to try too. Fishing is possible and there's a model yacht pond if you bring your own boat.

I remember COney Island getting run down when I was a kid back in the 70's. I can't imagine it getting anymore run down without looking like Bronx-on-the-Beach!
