Top 3 Best Mexican Restaurants for Vegetarians in New York City

Neighburrito, Habana Outpost, and Tequila Chito's

New York is known for it's culinary diversity and if you seek it, you shall find it. True, the best Mexican food in the United States could arguably be found on the Left Coast, but when cravings hit, who wants to hop on a plane? There are plenty of fantastic Mexcian restuarants in all five boroughs, but what about those of us who don't partake in eating carne? By no means is this an extensive list, just a few of my favorites.

Neighburrito
127 Rivington St between Norfolk St and Essex St., Manhattan
This is quick and delicious comida. Not much bigger than your first studio apartment, Neighburrito has plenty of vegetarian options if not space. Portions are big and easily made vegan. There is a thin metal table with a few stools for those not eating on the go. My favorites are the BBC (bean and cheese with pico de gallo and tofu sour cream) and the Breakfast Burrito made with soysage and tofu crumble. You can also create your own masterpiece!

Habana Outpost757 Fulton St at S. Portland St, Brooklyn
Ride a bike to mix your own margarita, grab a delicious grilled corn on the cob slathered with a special buttery, cheesey, spicy topping then go relax on the patio. The guacamole burrito is, in my humble opinion, the tastiest selection. This eco-friendly sister site of Cafe Habana boasts solar panels, rain water collection, 100% compostable cutlery and cups, compost and recycle stations. The atmosphere is fun but definitely prepare yourself for crowds. Also good to know is that Habana Outpost is cash only.

Tequila Chito's358 West 23rd St between 8th Ave and 9th Ave, Manahttan
It's all about the happy hour and kitsch here! Bright happy colors splashed about and $3 margaritas until 8 pm is enough to lure me back. The guacamole is really good and made fresh at the table. Plus, free chips and salsa at each table. The service here is on point and very helpful. Many vegetarian options, but ask if dishes are made with chicken broth or animal fat if modifying a meal. The vegetarian platillo is big enough for two and comes with a deliciously sloppy cheese enchilada, guacamole tostada, and a bean burrito.
