WordPress.com
There once was a time when nobody knew what WordPress was or that there was any where else to blog other than blogger.com. Now, WordPress.com has surpassed all other blogging sites by leaps and bounds. The policies and rules set forth in WordPress is what gave it its fame and set it above and beyond all the other blog sites. WordPress has a heavy non-commercial policy that it enforces strictly. If you have too many affiliate links, WordPress will shut your blog down and you lose all information. This makes WordPress contain a lot more valuable information in the eyes of the Almighty Google. If you're looking to start somewhere with blogging, this is the place to do it.
Blogger/Blogspot
Blogger was the site that gave blogs their popularity. All blogs should bow down and pay homage to blogger. Without this website, blogging may not even exist. Blogger first got its appeal by being run by Google. Everyone who knew anything about the internet knew that you couldn't go wrong with Google. That held true up until internet marketers got a hold of it and started splogging (blogs built to do nothing more than spam and gain traffic). This forced blogger to change and due to this, blogger will sometimes flag legit blogs as spam so you might log in one day to find your blog deleted. The good news is that you can get away with a lot more affiliate links in a blogger blog than form WordPress.
Personal Hosted Blog Service
Hosting your very own blog can be done with as little as $7 a month. Depending on which type of hosting you get will be the deciding factor in which type of blog you can create. Hosting your own blog however, gives you the best potential for making an unlimited amount of income. You don't have to worry about any rules or policies and you can stream line your ads in a way that the other sites can't. Also, by hosting your own blog you can really maximize your profits as you don't have to put up with any of the ads that you might get from the other services listed.
There is only one thing you really 'miss' out on when you are decide to go your own route and host your own personal blog. It deals directly with traffic. A newly created blog with no posts on it is going to take a lot of time to build it up to where Google will even recognize it. In all honesty, you are much better of using one of the others listed above before you venture off and host a personal blog.
