Top 3 Burger Joints in Fort Smith, AR

Roger Gowens
If you're new to Fort Smith, AR or find yourself passing through Fort Smith, located just off Interstate Highway 40 in western Arkansas just across the eastern border of Oklahoma, and find youself wanting a hamburger, here are three suggestions.

One of the oldest restaurants in Fort Smith, AR is Ed Walker's Drive-In located in the old part of town at 1500 Towson Ave. Towson runs north and south from downtown to South Zero Street. 1500 is just a few blocks south of downtown. Ed Walker's also makes one of the top 3 burgers in Fort Smith.

Ed Walker's has a 50's motif, sort of like Arnold's in the Happy Days TV series. There are other items on the menu, but Ed Walker's is known far and wide in the area for their delicious burgers with your choice of toppings. Prices are quite reasonable and you will enjoy the downhome atmosphere of Ed Walkers' Drive-In and the laidback aura of Ed Walker's.

There is a wide variety of drinks available, including beer at Walker's, also.

Just to the north, located on the west end of downtown is The Varsity Sports Grill at 318 Garrison Ave. If you're travelling from the west, just take the Roland, OK exit onto U.S. Hwy 64 and follow the signs 5 miles or so into downtown Fort Smith. It's divided highway all the way to the Arkansas River bridge, Just watch for speed traps in Roland.

The Varsity makes one of the top 3 burgers in Fort Smith, in my opinion. The Varsity has lots of framed, autographed jerseys such as those of Brett Favre and Troy Aikman along with other sports memorabilia, as you would expect from a sports bar.

Try my favorite, the hickory burger, which is outstanding. There are lots of TVs for catching any live sports action and a full bar and gameroom with pool tables. The Varsity is a little pricier than Ed Walker's, but not extremely expensive.

The third in my installment of the top 3 burgers in Fort Smith, AR is George's, located just east of downtown at 2120 Grand Ave. George's has been owned and run by the Catsavis family since 1983.

George's features some Greek items on the menu such as Greek salads and gyros, but George's is famous in the area for their burgers and homemade fries. George's is so generous with the homestyle fries, you might want to split an order between two people.

There are a variety of burgers to choose from, mostly differing in size. Beer and wine are available, along with good service in a clean, family environment. Prices are reasonable at George's and if you wish you can have a salad instead of fries with your excellent burger.
