Top 3 Burger Joints in Indianapolis

Adam Hughes
Modern restaurants have come a long way in recent years in terms of offering more healthy fare than at any time in the past. Whether you eat low-carb, low-fat, all-natural, or vegan, chances are that you can find something to suit your needs somewhere along the local "restaurant row". Beyond fit food, today's menus also offer an almost overwhelming variety of choices: regional cuisine, 34 catches of the day, 17 types of baked potatoes, etc. But sometimes (and nearly always for some people), nothing will satisfy your hunger and cravings but a good old red-blooded American hamburger. If you find yourself in Indianapolis with a hankering for ground beef, these three establishments are among your best bets.

Bub's Burgers and Ice Cream

Bub's Burgers and Ice Cream is located in the Art and Design District of Carmel, the trendy Northern suburb of Indy. Don't let it's posh location fool you, though: Bub's is all about the burgers. While they offer other delicious main dishes and, of course, tasty ice cream, Bub's painstakingly tends to their Big Ugly Burgers ( Get it? B.U.B.). As Bub's web site details, their burgers are handpattied, and their buns are custom baked locally to fit their burgers to a tee. Established in 2003, they've quickly become a local classic.

RAM Restaurant and Brewery

RAM is not an Indiana exclusive, with locations in five States, but it is a family-owned business that fits right in with Hoosier values and sensibilities. With its devotion to the "art" of the burger, RAM's Indianapolis and Fishers locations offer Central Indiana an awesome atmosphere in which to enjoy any of well over a dozen burgers, ranging from the Garlic Swiss burger to the Peanut Butter burger. It's hard to go wrong here!

Mug-n-Bun

An Indianapolis classic for more than 50 years, the Mug-n-Bun continues to offer Indy residents a glimpse into the past with its traditional drive-in atmosphere, as well as a new eat-in dining room. Combine the ambience with one of their trademark burgers (single, double, triple, Super, etc.), and you've got a combination that can't be beat.

While these three "burger joints" are among the best in Indianapolis, the Hoosier capital offers many other fine choices for satisfying your red-meat needs. A listing of some of the other great burgers in the city can be found at Citysearch. Grab your condiments, strap on your bib, and chow down!
