I quickly came to realize that Calloway County, which is in western Kentucky houses some of the most interesting home town bars, bars that will make you want to re-visit them as soon as possible. Listed below are my top 3 local bars in Calloway County, Kentucky.
The Keg
The Keg is located at 1051 North 16th Street Murray, KY 42071, (270) 762-0040 and is open Monday-Friday 11am to 11pm on Friday open until 1am, Saturday 12pm to 2am, Sunday 2pm to 11pm. The keg represents quality, value and comfort at affordable prices. I eat here often because of the excellent Cajun cuisine, it tastes as if you are in Louisiana. The chef here at the Keg travels to Louisiana for cooking seminars and to meet up with local restaurant owners to acquire more skills in cooking Cajun cuisine. I highly recommend the Cajun Crawfish's & Shrimp Bread Boat for 11.99 and a top shelf Margarita for $4.50, this dish is absolutely mouthwatering, filling and simply glorious.
At night the Keg fills up with all the collage students from Murray State University and all of the old time locals who are devoted customers for the cheap food, beer and entertainment. The Keg offers Karaoke every Wednesday night at 8:30, Johnny Mac & Kyle on Tuesday nights at 8:30 pm. Terry Humphrey the piano man performs every Friday night at 8:00 pm. On Saturdays The Keg is the place to be, the bands come out to play and get the crowds all riled up. Some of the bands that have played and continue to play at the keg are Lock & Load, Bending Karma, Tony Louge, Jennifer Fox and the Pillow Fighters and Johnny Mac & The Heart Attacks. Come out and enjoy a night at the Keg. The Keg also has a huge billiards room with 6 pool tables and all the accessories needed to play. There is a $5.00 cover charge when the bands are playing.
The Big Apple Cafe
The Big Apple Cafe is located at 1005 Arcadia Circle Murray, KY 42071, (270) 759-8866 and is open from Monday-Saturday 11:00AM to midnight; also open for Sunday brunch from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. The Big Apple offers private dinning rooms for parties and cooperate meetings. The Big Apple opened in 1950 and has become a landmark to the locals here due to its atmosphere, authentic Mexican food and great entertainment.
This bar-restaurant offers a diverse menu with the top seller being their "Beer Cheese Soup" and the famous "Bean Roll", which I sometimes have a hard time choosing between the two. Although, they do have several other authentic Mexican and American cuisines, I prefer the Beer Cheese Soup and the Bean Roll; both dishes cost less than $7.00. The Big Apple features live entertainment with bands on Thursday nights and impromptu jam sessions by local musicians; they even have poetry reading night on Tuesday. This bar gets packed fast and is hopping until the doors close, one of my favorite places to hang out. On band nights there is a $5.00 cover charge.
Club 641
Club 641 is located at 10960 U.S. 641 Puryear, TN 38251, (731) 247-5794. This is a little "Hole in the wall" bar that brings with it all that redneck character the south has to offer and is the best greasy spoon restaurant ever. This place definitely requires an open mind, upon first inspection of this bar; I thought it was not my type of place. Then came the band "Mo Jo Peddler" who played a mix of blues and classic rock, wow did they rock! I had never heard of them before, but they totally blew me away. I never thought that I would enjoy hanging out at this little bar, but I did and I go back every time Mo Jo peddler is playing. My friends and myself have returned to this little place to see other bands like Constant Calling and Tony Logue; they were great too. 641 Club is small with a small dance floor, but everyone is really nice, the service is great and the cover charge is only $5.00, the beer is $3.00 for a bottle or $4.00 for a draft pitcher. One tip from a local to those visiting the Murray area, Club 641 is in Puryear, TN, which is 7-miles from Murray and in Henry County. The Sheriffs Department sits right outside of Club 641 across the street to wait for people leaving the bar intoxicated. I highly recommend that you have a designated driver for your outing at Club 641.
