Who were the top 3 Singing Cowboys From the 30's - 50's? There were some who could do it all: sing, shoot and ride a horse. Cowboys were generally thought of as those rough riding men who were only thought of as rowdy gun toting, gunslinger, gun shooting characters of the wild wild west. Yet, there were some who could whip out a gun in addition to whip out a song that would make your eyes water.

Top 3 Male Singing Cowboys From the 30's - 50's: Herb Jeffry's

My son once asked me if there were any Black cowboys. Well 'yes' was my answer. And so we have the amazing Herb Jeffry's. Born in 1913, he was the first Black singing cowboy to grace the screen. Jeffry's was known as the 'Bronze Buckaroo'. He made five westerns with all star Black actors and cast. Jeffry's has a deep baritone voice. he sang with the Duke Ellington band during the 40's. He recorded "Flamingo' which sold over fifty million copies. 'Flamingo' was Herb's most famous record. He lives in Southern California and still records songs in addition to playing music. Herb Jeffry's was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame in 2004. You can enjoy a few of his songs and episodes here.

Gene Autry made over six hundred forty recordings. Of those, three hundred were written by him. His songs sold over one hundred million copies. Gene was discovered by Will Rogers and later because of his singing and great camera appeal, he was dubbed as Oklahoma's Yodeling Cowboy. He first became a television actor in 1934. From 1934 through 1953, he starred in over ninety three films. In 1940, he was voted as the fourth biggest box office attraction. America loved Gene Autry and his songs. Not only was he a sensation on the television screen, Gene Autry recorded the nations second best selling all-time Christmas song 'Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer'. In addition, he also recorded 'Here Comes Santa Claus' and 'Here Comes Peter Cottontail' which were only a few of his platinum record. From 1950 thru 1955, he produced and starred in 'The Gene Autry Show' which aired on CBS Television. Roy rogers starred in ninety one films and a televsion series that ran from 1950 thru 1957 with his wife Dale Evans right by his side. Roy rogers and Dale Evans were not only the first husband wife stars of their own series, they were the most popular cowboy and cowgirl team ever. Families remember gathering around the televsiion on sundays to watch the roy rogers show. Roy ogers had a side kick and aspecila horse.
