Top 3 Microbrews in Indiana

Adam Hughes
Microbreweries was a word first coined in England during the 1970s to denote ale producers who were interested in offering beers with a variety of specialized characteristics, as opposed to the typical mass-produced lagers that dominated the landscape in the years after prohibition in America. While microbreweries are technically defined by the production of a relatively small amount of beer per year (the exact restrictions vary by locale), the genre has come to be associated with experimentation, a focus on perfecting specific tastes and textures, and an inviting atmosphere for beer aficionados. The state of Indiana is graced with several solid microbreweries, and the ones listed here are some of the best from top to bottom.

Lafayette Brewing Company, 622 Main Street, Lafayette

Established in 1993, the Lafayette Brewing Company is a full-service brewpub, meaning that they offer a strong menu of edibles to complement their beers. Among the food choices are sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers, and a variety of munchies (nachos, wings, etc.). It is Lafayette Brewing Company's selection of ales, of course, that really set it apart. In addition to such standing favorites as the Eastside Bitter and Piper's Pride, this brewpub also churns out specialty ales throughout the year corresponding to holidays and seasons.

Upland Brewing Company, 350 West 11th Street, Bloomington

The upland Brewing Company is a vital part of Bloomington's booming social scene, going beyond purvey of the typical microbrewery. Regularly winning awards with its custom beers like Oktoberfest and Helios Pale Ale, Upland also maintains a vibrant events schedule. Such happenings as the Upland Film Fest and the UpCup Homebrew Competition give patrons an experience beyond the normal microbrewery atmosphere. Like the Lafayette Brewing Company, Upland is also a brewpub, so you can come for dinner and ale.

Turoni's Main Street Brewery, 408 North Main Street, Evansville

It's debatable whether Turoni's is more famous for its beers or for its pizza, but, either way, it is a favorite destination for Evansville citizens and patrons. Founded in 1963, Turoni's continued popularity has allowed it to expand to three locations in Indiana's "boot". Whichever one you choose, you'll be treated to great food and such stalwart ales as Vinney's Lager, Thunderbolt Read Ale, and Blue Eyed Moose India Pale Ale. Add in a special seasonal beers, and there is something special here for everyone in your party.

Indiana's landscape is dotted with more than 30 microbreweries, and many of them offer great-tasting choices, fun food items, and inviting atmospheres. The ale houses listed here, though, represent some of the absolute best that the Hoosier State has to offer.
