Top 3 Places to Buy Halloween Costumes in Athens, Georgia

Morgon Luvall Newquist
Athens is a college town full of students who love to celebrate and party, and Halloween is certainly no different. There are many parties and gatherings over the Halloween weekend (Fall Break at the University of Georgia being the Friday before Halloween only enhances this) and most of them you'll need some kind of costume for. If you want to buy a costume in town rather than online so you can see it in person and try it on, here are the three best places to take a look at in Athens.

Party City
(706) 316-3900

Party City is on Atlanta Highway in the Barnes and Noble shopping center. It is a chain business, but each year in September most of their store becomes dedicated to Halloween. They have a large selection of fairly generic costumes as well as popular character costumes, as well as a number of accessories. Any part of a costume except for "nice" shoes can be found here. There are wigs, hair accessories, swords and other weapons, gloves, belts, masks, and makeup. This is probably the best place for costumes, because their prices are reasonable and their selection is big. You also won't need to make another stop anywhere else because they carry so many other Halloween costume necessities. It can get pretty busy and run out of stock of many of their costumes, so going early to pick yours out is a good idea.

Junkman's Daughter's Brother
(706) 543-4454

Junkman's is, as the name suggests, a store full of odds and ends. It does have costumes, and is a regular local stop for theater, competition and Halloween needs for many Athenians. Its selection is very eclectic, but it is definitely worth a look to see what they have in stock. If you buy a costume here, you won't have to worry about whether lots of other people are going to be wearing it because you bought it at Party City. Junkman's is in Downtown on East Clayton Street.

Lee's Wigs
(706) 549-2392

Lee's is more of an accessory shop than a full-blown costume shop, but it is worth a look if you need a wig to complete your Halloween costume. They also carry hats, hair pieces, make-up and jewelry. They are also located in Downtown Athens on East Clayton Street, so a quick stop here wouldn't be out of the way if you purchased a costume at Junkman's.

These three stores are your best bet for costumes and accessories in town. There are also other places where costumes can be purchased. In some years large costume outlets open up for only a month or two and they tend to have a very large selection as it is all they sell. Places like Target, Wal-Mart and even Publix will have some costume items available as the holiday approaches. But remember that Athens is also only about an hour from the outskirts of Atlanta, so if these three stores don't have exactly what you want there are a number of great stores in the city. Buying costumes online is also another option.

Good luck finding the costume of your choice and enjoy Halloween in the Classic City!
