Wine, no doubt is one of the world's most loved beverages. One could say that wine is one of life's simple joys. The French are known for their obsession with wine and enjoy it on a daily basis. When the world is consuming so much wine, it is important that we know what wines are best for our health. As you may be aware, the organic goods market is growing at a very steady pace. A variety of organic wines are now available for consumers to buy. Although organic wines come with a higher price tag as do most organic goods, they also come with increased health benefits. What increased health benefits does organic wine give you that traditional wines don't have? Here is a list of Pros and cons of organic wines vs. traditional wines.

Organic wines VS traditional wines
Why should you choose organic wine?

1. Organic wines are produced with organic grapes. Any food that is being organically grown must follow a strict criteria. Organic foods must be certified before they can be labeled "organic". Traditional wines are grown with grapes that are usually heavily sprayed with pesticides. Organic wineries do not add flavors such as oak chips to their wines, and use very basic wine making techniques that involves yeast for fermentation. Some traditional wines may be labeled "made with organic grapes", this means that 70% of their grapes come from organic sources. So it is important when choosing the best wine for your health that you read your labels carefully.

2. Organic wines are not sprayed with chemicals and pesticides and tend to have greater health benefits, and brighter flavors. When you buy organic wine you are doing more then buying a healthier wine. You are helping change the way you live in the future. Organic wine is more then a bolder flavor, "Organic wine is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations", says the USDA.

3. Organic wines contain less sulfites then traditional wines. Sulfites are a salts or sulfurous acids that occur naturally in many wines. It is vary rare to find a wine that does not have sulfites. Added sulfites are generally used for preservation of wines. 100% Organic wines are made with no added sulfites. The less sulfites a wine contains, the healthier it will be for your body.

Drinking wine in moderation is beneficial to your overall health. Many studies have shown that drinking one glass of wine a day can decrease your chances of heart disease. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion with that perfect glass of wine, or just sitting down and enjoying a glass of wine at your next meal, it is important to choose the best wine for your health. Organic wine provides you with all of the benefits that a traditional wine would give, without harmful pesticides. Joyce - well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad...

Your second statement is patently false. Organic vineyards are indeed sprayed with lots of different pesticides, sometimes ound for ound, more than non-organic ones. The difference is that organic growers are limited to what they can spray - however many of the materials are the same as non-organic. Organic vineyards also use a lot of copper sulfate which is a heavy metal and can be very toxic to soil microbes. Please do your homework!

I think organic wine is really coming around... From what I understand the first "organic" wines to show up in the US were just quick attempts made to piggyback on the Green movement. These days there are some great wines out there that are organic and delicious.
There is a great wine bar in Brooklyn called Crave, they are somewhere on Henry St... Anyways they have an awesome wine called Kuyen from a cool winery in Chile. I try to get a glass once a week!

I like Sherry. Due to medications I am now taking, I've dropped alcoholic beverages. But if I had my d'ruthers, I would check this out, now that you've told me about it. Pesticides on something big is one thing. But when every little grape gets some, it's bound to add up quickly. Sounds good to me!
