Top 3 Strategies on How to Relax on Vacation

Katherine Huether
You may think it's redundant to think about how to relax on vacation. After all, isn't that what vacations are for? Well, you'd be surprised. A lot of people either plan vacations that end up being stressful or they take vacation time so they can do errands and home improvements around the house. Now that's not very relaxing!

If you know how to take a vacation and completely enjoy yourself and not get stressed out - that's great! But for the rest of us - we seem to need reminders on how to get the most of our vacation time.

Turn Off the Cell Phone

Some of the most relaxing vacations I've taken are ones where the cell phones don't work all that well. Sure, it's nice to have a signal when an emergency arises. It's also nice to touch base with family and friends during down time. However, tending to work matters is a different story.

It's sad when you see a mother or father on vacation with their kids yet they're on the phone with work trying to smooth over some difficulty. It's called a vacation for a reason. Leave work matters at work and you'll return feeling renewed, refreshed and productive.

Type of Vacation

Some vacations are more relaxing than others. Trips that have you hopping from one destination to the next tend to be a little tiring. Vacations where you spend all of your time in one place tend to be more refreshing.

A cruise vacation gives you the best of both worlds. Your itinerary is virtually set. Once you pay for the cruise that usually includes room and board. The ships have plenty of entertainment too and in between ports of call you can relax and enjoy yourself on the boat.

The key is to find the type of vacation that suits your personality and allow yourself ample time to relax. For example, I don't personally find tour packages relaxing because being required to go wherever the itinerary says we need to go is a little stressful. Other people may feel differently so it is important to match your personality.

Consider Visiting a Spa

If you really need some extra time to unwind, pamper yourself at a spa. Also, some spas have complete packages so your vacation could actually be a spa visit. Spa owners go out of their way to make sure that their clients feel pampered and relaxed.

However, spa trips are what you make of them. I remember visiting a spa recently and there was someone in the changing room who sat there with her phone, texting her friends, the entire time. I got stressed out just watching her.

Learning how to relax on vacation is very important for well being. It is beneficial to health to take time off, turn off the cell phones, and just rest your body and mind.
