Top 3 Vampire Novels

Vampire Novel Alternatives to Twilight

Roman
This list is more of a calling for people to not read Twilight than anything else. I don't mean to offend anyone by that statement, I understand that the book is meant to appeal to adolescent girls and I'm sure it attracts many others, but it is also written as if by an adolescent girl. I also understand that it's meant as entertainment, and to many it provides that. I'm sure many would not find certain things entertaining that I do. However, I'm speaking strictly from a literary perspective, and this is not what I would call literature. And while I'm not particularly a fan of vampire novels, that doesn't mean that they're not good (Twilight being the exception.) So here I've provided you with a list of 3 alternatives to your vampire needs.

1.Dracula by Bram Stoker - The classics are always the best. The original, it's a must read for any vampire lover. Most of our ideas about vampire lore stem from this book. The novel is told in a series of diary entries and letters, telling of how Dracula attempts to plant himself in Europe. Professor Abraham Van Helsing learns of his coming to England and attempts to stop him. Yes, this is also where we get the idea for the Van Helsing movies, and probably many vampire related movies not based off other books. (Though those other books are probably heavily influenced by this one.)

2. Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice - I would actually recommend the entire series, but this is the most famous one. It tells the tale of two vampires living in New Orleans, a narrative infused with a romantic quality that captures the reader. Lestat desires company, so he turns Louis into a vampire, and the two become immortal companions. You might be turned off if you saw the movie, thinking that you don't want to read a story you've already heard. However, I encourage you to do so anyway, as you may enjoy it quite a bit and find several surprises.

3. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova - This one is a little more recent and traces the folklore of the vampire through history, back to Vlad Tepes the equivalent to the fictional Count Dracula. Very unique and I believe this is going to be made into a movie soon.

If you have any more suggestions let me know. But please, I beg you, please put down that Stephanie Meyer book. I also encourage any alternating viewpoints regarding Twilight. (Why do vampires sparkle in the sunlight?)

(This is what I wrote, don't know why all the other stuff showed up, I'm going to try to enter it again.)
I will have to agree with Katrina. The Midnight Breed series is wonderful, erotic and a non-stop read. I only wish I would not have found out about the series for another year or so. I read the first six books in 3 weeks and the next one doesn't come out until January, maybe in December. It is a great series and if you're married, your husband will enjoy the "benefits". J.R. Ward has a series called the Black Dagger Brotherhood that I am starting TODAY!

I'm also with you on the whole Twilight thing. I caught a few pages of it from niece's book, but it just didnt interest me. I think the series works for the tween crowd because they just dont know a good vamp book. I think if you are into vampire novels, you shouldnt read anything else before you read Dracula and any one of Rice's novels. I recently discovered a series called the Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian you might also enjoy. It plays more on romance, but its very addicting.

Hi, I kind of have to agree with you here about the twilight series. I will admit that I did enjoy the first book, but it got annoying after that. I really started to get sick of Bella and Jacob there were so many character flaws I lost count. After a while Edward becomes so exasperating and over protective I felt like chocking him! The story also begins to meander with New Moon and Eclipse
But here is where I have to give Meyer a few brownie points. I gave up reading her series for the story line a long time ago. I couldn't care less what happened in the end. The only reason why I read her books is for .......The Cullens. I have to admit I adore them. I liked them well before the movie came out. I don't know why but I think they are a great invention. It could just be the super hero syndrome I have suffered from for a while, but to me they were the ONLY saving grace of the books. I loved their personality, style and choices in powerful engines. (This is coming from someone who knows
