Top 3 Weekend Escapes

Eileen Thai
Every once in a while, we need a weekend escape from the daily grind. Here are three ideas for a weekend getaway:

Boston, MA

Boston is always beautiful no matter what time of year you are visiting. Whether you are into sports, food or history, there is so much to do. Since Boston is a small and safe city, you can walk almost everywhere. Or you can take the subway. For sports fans, a baseball game at Fenway Park is a must. For good Italian food, the North End is an excellent place to go to. History buffs will know that Paul Revere's house is also located here, as is the Old North Church. On a nice sunny day, a picnic at the Public Gardens or a walk along the Charles River is a nice option. One of Boston's biggest celebration is the July 4th Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, which is held in the Esplanade adjacent to the Charles River. It is quite a show with pyrotechnics and fireworks synchronizing with the musical score of the Boston Pops. It is also a zoo, so be sure to go there early to find a good seating area. If time and weather permit, you can hop on a ferry to explore the Boston Harbor Islands, the islands of Cape Cod or go whale watching.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Another fun getaway is to Fort Lauderdale. No longer the playground of college kids, Fort Lauderdale is now known more as a premier yachting destination, attracting megayachts from all over the world. The Winterfest Boat Parade, held annually in mid-December, is one of Fort Lauderdale's most sensational events. Hundreds of boats, all decked out to the yin yang, parade down ten miles of the waterway showcasing their spectacular holiday lights and decorations. It is a sight to behold. You can see these beautiful yachts and the palatial homes that line the canals when you take a water taxi, which incidentally is a great way to get from one place to another. Enjoy your getaway to Fort Lauderdale with a relaxing day on the beach or a nice stroll along Las Olas Blvd or Riverwalk.

Sarasota, Florida

One of my favorite weekend escapes is to Sarasota. This little city is not only friendly, it also has lots to offer! You can spend your entire getaway soaking in the sun at the magnificent beaches in Siesta Key. Or you can spend some time hiking the trails at Myakka State Park or simply shop until you drop at St Armand's Circle or in downtown Sarasota. For some culture, you can visit the Ringling Museum of Art or catch a play at the Asolo Repertory Theatre.

Consider these three options when you feel like you need a weekend getaway. You will not be disappointed.
