Minnesota is possibly best known for its ferocious winters. But true Minnesotans know that winter weather can be a blessing in disguise. It makes for some great recreation opportunities. There are many places to enjoy a great winter escape in Minnesota. The following three weekend escapes may be cold and snowy, but they are also fun and refreshing!

1. Maplelag Resort

This destination ski resort is located in Northern Minnesota. It is one of the most beautiful places in the entire state. You can spend your Maplelag winter escape cross country skiing on over 50 perfectly groomed kilometers of trails. Other fun activities include hot tubing, ice skating, sliding in the sled bowl, dancing the night away at the Saturday night dance party, performing in and enjoying the Sunday night variety show and taking the plunge (sitting in the old fashioned sauna and then jumping through a hole in the ice in Little Sugarbush Lake). The authentic homemade Scandinavian food at Maplelag is excellent as well. Maple weekend escapes cost between $200 and $400, depending on when you stay and which cabin you stay in.

There are also several groomed cross-country ski trails and snowmobile trails near Cove Point Lodge. After a day of winter recreation, spend your evening relaxing by the huge fireplace or swimming in the pool. Cove Point Lodge also has a bar and grill, where you can enjoy a variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers and other meals while feasting your eyes on a beautiful view of Lake Superior. 3. Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center

Wolf Ridge is an excellent place to take your family on a winter escape. Families can spend time together playing in the snow and learning about nature. During a winter escape to Wolf Ridge, you can enjoy a variety of winter activities including candlelight skiing, snowshoeing by Lake Superior, dog sledding, winter birding and more. A weekend escape to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center costs $199 for adults, $180 for kids between the ages of five and seventeen, and is free for children under four years of age.
