Top 4 Charities for the Christmas Season on Conroe, TX

How to Make This Christmas a True Season of Giving

Cheryl Engelke
The season for giving is upon us. With Christmas quickly approaching, local charities are looking for the communities they reside in for additional support. Here, in Conroe, Texas, we are no exception to the rule. Charities in Conroe and throughout the U.S. are in even more need during the Christmas season when giving seems to always slow down. Because of the struggling economy, charities are seeing a greater loss. (http://www.kstatecollegian.com/local-charities-struggle-with-national-recession-1.1738139)
In Conroe, here are four great charities to donate time, money and/or other resources to.

Gullo Christmas for Kids

Started in 1992 by Tony Gullo, Sr., Christmas for Kids started out as a party for children to come and eat and be able to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas. Today, Christmas for Kids helps 50-55 families each year. At the party, families are given a gift card, a ham for Christmas dinner, and a Christmas tree and decorations.

The Gullo family also has two other programs funded by their charity; the Montgomery county Scholarship Program and Earning for Learning. The Montgomery County Scholarship program gives out 12-20 $1,500 scholarships per year. Earning for Learning is a great program with 4 local elementary schools where 3rd graders are awarded $1 for every book they read in 6 weeks. If they read 12, their earnings are doubled.

Homes 4 Good

Homes 4 Good is a non-profit agency designed for placing children in adoptive and foster homes. Every year, 10,000 children are placed in foster care in Texas. 6,000 will be placed for adoption, but only about 2,000 will actually be placed. Established in 2002, Homes 4 Good does its part to help find homes for these children.

The 4 in Homes 4 Good stands for 4 things: permanency, partnership, perseverance, and prayer.

Bridgewood Farms

Bridgewood Farms is an excellent resource for children and adults with special needs. Their purpose is to help the mentally handicapped learn to live life and to reach their full potential.

The programs at Bridgewood Farms offer the clients a place to develop employment and personal life skills. They teach several different classes that include a Horticulture program and the making of homemade items. It is a wonderful program for the people it serves.

Salvation Army

While the Salvation Army is not a localized community, it is one of my favorite charities. As one of the longest running charities, the Salvation Army has helped hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. I am sure you are familiar with the bell ringers at the stores during the Christmas season.

If you ever wondered what your change in the bucket goes for, I can tell you. The Salvation Army has shelters for the homeless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation services, children's programs, soup kitchens, disaster relief, and emergency relief services, just to name a few. Their thrift stores are always in constant need of volunteers and donations, as are their local offices. Even if you are not in the Conroe area, you can always find a location near you on their website.

This year, I know we are all struggling. Maybe if you can't donate a few dollars, you can donate a little time. Make this Christmas season a true season of giving.
