Top 40 Irish Movies for St. Patrick's Day

Best Irish Movies About Irish Love, Irish Luck, Irish Pride, Irish Folklore and Irish Blood

Aly Adair
St. Patrick's Day is one of my favorite holidays even though I am not Irish. There is something magical and hopeful about St. Patrick's Day that makes me search for that Pot O'Gold, makes me want to kiss the Blarney Stone, makes me drink green beer like I have that Irish pride, and makes me hunt for the best corned beef and cabbage in town.

I love to listen to songs about luck on St. Patrick's Day like these Top 50 Songs About Luck that I have as an MP3 playlist on my iPod. Somehow these top 50 songs about luck inspire me to believe that I am next in line for a string of good Irish Luck. There are some songs written about bad luck, but those make you feel even more hopeful.

I also like to watch the many Irish movies I have in my DVD collection about Irish love, Irish luck, and Irish pride. The Irish movies about Irish blood, gangs, and immigration struggles are also very inspiring. One of my favorites is Gangs of New York. Probably the best Irish movies, at least my favorite Irish movies to watch on St. Patrick's Day, are the ones about good old Irish love stories like Once, The Quiet Man, Tristan and Isolde, Return to Me, and Far and Away.

I got to meet Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the real-life lovers in the movie Once, when I was a volunteer at Sundance Film Festival in January 2007 where their film Once screened. You can read more about their real life love story here: Once, An Academy Award Nominated Film Worth the Listen.Glen Hansard played in the Irish band The Frames and he can also be seen in the movie The Commitments. The title song, Falling Slowly, in the Irish movie Once won an Academy Award in 2008.

I cannot leave out Rudy as one of my favorite Irish good luck movies to watch on St. Patrick's Day since it is the story of an underdog who realizes his lifelong dream to play football for Notre Dame. Here is my list of favorite best Irish movies on my:

Great list! I wish more people were interested in Irish films. I’m really looking forward to seeing White Irish Drinkers. Its about an irish family in Brooklyn during the 70s and it looks soooooo intense. http://www.whiteirishdrinkersthemovie.com/

Good list. I am still hoping to find "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" with Betty Grable and Dick Haynes. That was one of my favorites when I was a child (I am dating myself) and I have tried unsuccessfully to find the dvd/vhs.

I've seen many of these movies. Luck, I don't know. But there's always a story!
