Top 5 1970s Kids Commercials: Must Have 70s Products For Kids

These Five Foods and Toys Were Highlighted in Great 70s Commercials

Sherri Thornhill
Kids' commercials in the 1970s were able to tap into the psyche of children and parents alike. There were many great commercials and cheesy commercials in the '70s, but those that were aimed at creating enthusiasm in kids, did the best job making the sale. I narrowed my favorite 1970s kids' commercials down to a top 5 list. If the commercial was memorable or made me bug my parents until they caved in and bought me the product or toy, it's on this top 5 list.

Top Kids' Commercials for Food Products

Coke- Mean Joe Greene throws his jersey to a kid. As a lifelong Steelers fan, this commercial is definitely one of my favorites of all times. The commercial came out in 1979 and even though I loved Pepsi and Orange Crush, I tried a coke because Mean Joe Greene drank them! The kid in the commercial helped Mean Joe seem a little less mean when he handed him a cold Coke and got a jersey in return. See the commercial here.

Oscar Mayer Bologna- My bologna has a first name! This commercial with an adorable little boy sitting on a dock and eating his bologna sandwich has become an iconic 70s kids' commercial. Not only did it make me want the bologna, it taught me how to spell the name of the product. It made my PB&J lunches have to share duty with my bologna lunches in the 70s.

Life Cereal- Mikey likes it! Who can forget this 70s commercial with two big brothers using their little brother as their cereal tasting guinea pig? Luckily for Mikey, he liked the cereal. Unlucky for my little brother though, because this commercial gave me the idea to use him as my food taster! Top Kids' Commercials for Toys

Big Wheel- This toy was made by MARX and came out in 1969. It was my all-time favorite toy and it gave me freedom to "rule the sidewalks". The Big Wheel commercial shows kids' riding fast and furious and making slides and spins on their Big Wheel. What kid could watch that commercial and not want a Big Wheel of their own? This was the coolest 1970s present any kid could get. Check out the commercial here.

Evel Knievel Motorcycle- In 1976 Ideal Toys took advantage of the enormous popularity of Evel Knievel by making the Evel Knievel Motorcycle toy. All the little boys wanted this toy, but so did some of us little girls. Kids loved Evel Knievel's crazy stunts! This 70s commercial came out and showed all the neat things you could do with the motorcycle toy, like jump it 100 feet at top speed. I eventually talked my mom into buying me the stunt cycle for my birthday. I just wish I still had it. You can see the commercial by clicking here.

These made me consider how impressionable we are when we watch commercials - guess the advertisers are well aware of that fact. And kids do sell products in a big way, especially when they are portrayed in a happy fashion, such as Mikey and the bologna commercial. :)

We sure did pick the same two, I almost chose the Mikey one too! LOL

I was born in '77, so I'm a much better judge of 1980s commercials. Some of these you mention are definitely classics.

My memory is great--but I had a lil typo on Mean Joe's name the first time around--so I'm waiting on AC to fix it for me! Can't mess up the spelling on a Hall of Famer:) Happy Thanksgiving to you to Bill:)
