Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to investigate an apparent escape from Shutter Island, a mental institution for the criminally insane that only admits the most dangerous of patients. The girl who escapes seems to have "evaporated straight through the walls" and the guards have no idea where she could have gone. Daniels suspects that there is more to their insanity than their state of mind; that perhaps there is foul play. When he tries to interview one of the patients, she writes three letters on her notebook: "RUN".
