Top 5 Back to School Smartphones for Students

Sylvie Branch
Smartphones are a smart move for back to school. Keep schedules organized while on the go with a phone-PDA hybrid. Treating your student to a fresh piece of technology with all the latest features makes keeping in touch with the 'rents a little more attractive. After determining what your students needs are, shop around for the right match and know that prices vary according to contracts and dealers.

The following five smartphones made the list because of their many functions, ease of use and price.

1. Samsung Droid Charge

The Samsung Droid Charge is available for Verizon Wireless users. This handset runs on the Android OS. It has a high-speed processor and a large 4.3-inch touch screen. The Droid also features a camera with options and lots of available apps. This is the phone I use, and my only complaint is that the battery life is sometimes a problem. Students who are not diligent about recharging may run into an issue with the Droid. Price is approximately $299 with a new two-year contract with Verizon.

2. Motorola Atrix 4G1
If you need a great deal of power, AT & T's Motorola Atrix 4G has a 1GHz dual-core processor making it more like a simple laptop especially with the 4-inch touch screen. Since it has so many options, this is the best value for a student looking to get away with either a smartphone or a netbook. $99.00

3. Apple iPhone
Those new to smartphones can easily start with an Apple iPhone. Choose the latest model available which is currently the iPhone 4 and go from there. The built-in iPod and iTunes are a definite plus for students who love to listen to music throughout the day. The video chatting feature is another plus for those who want to stay in touch with siblings and friends back home. If you drag your feet on the purchase, the iPhone 5 will be out for fall 2011. All the iPhones are easy to use and available from both AT&T and Verizon.

4. BlackBerry Torch 9800
Productive smartphone with an updated operating system and web browser. The speed and reliability are live up to the BlackBerry standard. Great for those who prefer a keyboard to a touch screen. The company has a long track record and for this reason it may be a more familiar purchase for parents who have been using their own Blackberry. One of the main differences in this smartphone is that it has an extra small screen comparatively. Prices start as low as $29.99 with a new 2-year contract.

5. T-Mobile Sidekick 4G6.
Students who send a lot of messages will love the T-Mobile Sidekick in the T-Mobile 4G network. The handy keyboard is easy to use and the Android-based smartphone has a 3.5-inch screen which although is impressive, this phone is best used for sending texts and emails. The advertised 4G network is not quite as fast as some of the other smartphone options. Starting at $129.99
