If you are interested in trying some of these Belgium beers, but have no plans to head to Germany any time soon, you might try your luck at some of the larger liquor stores in your area. The stores that are usually large enough to look like a grocery store often have international beers. Another great place to order Belgium beer is at the BeerGreek.biz website.
Here is a list of the top 5 Belgium beers, so you know what to look for first:
1. Floreffe Darks - This dark beer, which is very thick and has a slightly burnt taste, is actually very bitter and sweet. If you like to taste a hint of chocolate in your alcoholic averages, then you'll want to give this beer a try. The alcohol content consists of 6.3% of the beer, which is actually pretty low for a German beer.
2. Hoegaarden - This beer has a combination of wheat and spices and a hint of banana flavoring. The beer has a smooth taste with a touch of sourness. Hoegaarden is quite dark, but not as dark as many of the other Belgium beers. All and all this beer has gotten high ratings in appearance, smell, and taste.
3. Trappist Westvleteren 12 - This stormy beer consists of a thick, dark, and musky taste. The alcohol content is actually higher than most German beers, being at 10.2%. However, the alcohol taste is very minimal. Trappist Westvleteren 12 has a combination of spices, molasses and Carmel seasonings. It's definitely a slow slipping beer to enjoy over a period of time. For a sweeter tasting beer, this is the one to go with.
4. St. Bernadus Pater 6, Prior 8 and Abt 12 - This beer has been described as cloudy, but very tasty.. There are a wide variety of seasonings involved with this brew. In most ordinary mixtures, you might not find these ingrediants to blend well. However, in this beer the fruits, such as plums and dried apricot have an added kick of peppermint seasoning. This beer doesn't taste like most other Belgium beers, so if you're looking for a different type of taste, this one will surely have your taste buds going crazy.
5. Achel Brune Extra - This brew is one of the creamier ones of the top 5. The alcohol content is a tad above average, being just about 9.5%. This is another beer you'll want to drink on the slower side. You'll find such seasonings as cinnamon, vanilla, toffee, coffee and a bit of Toblerone candy bar. This beer is less carbonated then most, which gives the beer a very smooth texture, making it easy to drink.
