Stretch marks '" friend to no one, enemy to all. Whether they are caused by pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss, or by sudden growth spurts, stretch marks are something that none of us are happy to see on our bodies. If you'd like to get your skin looking smoother again, here are a few things you can do to get rid of stretch marks. While it's not possible to get your skin looking the way it did before the stretch marks formed, you can minimize their appearance so that they are virtually undetectable.

Keep skin moisturized

Keeping skin moisturized is the key to treating and preventing stretch marks. Think about it like this. When a person wants to eliminate or prevent wrinkles and fine lines, what do they do? They keep their skin moisturized so that it stays supple and healthy. This logic works exactly the same way when you want to get rid of stretch marks. Apply a moisturizer to your skin in the morning, afternoon, after you shower, and before bed to help improve its elasticity.

Treat stretch marks in early stages

When stretch marks first form, they are typically purple, brown, or red in appearance. This is the stage that will respond best to treatment, so it's essential that you begin applying lotions that are made for stretch marks at once. Over time, stretch marks that are left untreated will fade to a sliver or white shade and are much more difficult to remove. Be proactive with your skin, as well, and treat stretch marks before they form. F or example, if you know you'll soon be starting a new diet or are going to try to get pregnant, begin moisturizing your skin at once. You may also want to try using an over-the-counter prescription-strength retinoid, such as Retin-A, Avage, or Renova, to get rid of stretch marks in early stages.

Increase Vitamin A, B & C intake

Vitamins A, B and C have been proven to play an essential role in skin health, and by increasing your intake of these essential vitamins, you can get rid of stretch marks. Alone, each of these vitamins will help keep your skin healthy, but together they are a literal powerhouse! Vitamin A maintains elasticity in the skin, Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which has been shown to prevent stretch marks, and Vitamin B helps with the skin's healing process. Thus, by consuming a healthy dose of each of these vitamins, you will erase the signs of newly formed stretch marks and help to prevent new ones from forming.

Get rid of old stretch marks

After surgery, doctors recommend using a scar removal cream to erase the signs of scarring. These same creams can be used to get rid of stretch marks too. They are available over the counter at an affordable price. Use these scar removal creams several times daily to get rid of stretch marks caused by surgery, pregnancy, weight gain or loss, and so on.

Remove stubborn stretch marks with laser treatment

For obvious reasons, laser treatment is one of the last options people try to get rid of stretch marks. This procedure can be costly and it will require several visits to a dermatologist. However it is a highly effective way to get rid of stretch marks that have been present for some time. Laser treatment can be used to rid the body of stretch marks anywhere on the body and works by promoting the production of collagen, which helps to fill in the stretch marks.
