Top 5 Boxing Matches for the Rest of 2010

The Best Fights that Need to Be Made in Boxing Before the Year is Out

Jake Emen
New Pacquiao vs. Mayweather rumors are swirling every day, but there's much more going on in the world of boxing besides the unending battle of negotiating wits that those two are taking part in. Between the red hot junior welterweight division, the Super Six tournament and on down the line, there are plenty of big fights on the horizon. Here are the top 5 matches for the rest of 2010 that need to be made to keep the sport revving on high where it's supposed to be.

The 5 Best for the Rest of 2010 in Boxing

1. Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather: Alright, there's plenty going on outside of the Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao drama, but this still has to top the list. It's number 1 and 2 pound for pound in the world, in their primes, with contrasting styles and personas topping it all off. Dreams were crushed when the initial fight was canceled, so I'll refrain from believing any of the hype until I see the first punch thrown.

2. Timothy Bradley vs. Devon Alexander: The best two junior welterweight fighters in the world are hopefully on a collision course towards a unification bout. Both camps have had plenty to say about one another, with Alexander's side in particular voicing its belief that Bradley doesn't want a bout. Both are undefeated and have showcase bouts coming up before the end of the summer, and assuming a set of wins, they should settle it in the ring come winter.

3. Paul Williams vs. Sergio Martinez II: These two battled it out in one of the best fights of 2009, with Williams bringing home a close decision that arguably could have gone to the other man. Since, Martinez toppled middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, meaning the rematch could be a legitimate middleweight title fight in an otherwise lackluster and forgettable division.

4. David Haye vs. Tomasz Adamek: Two former cruiserweight champions throwing hands in the heavyweight ranks, for the right to battle Wladimir Klitschko for the heavyweight championship of the world. Haye is already a heavyweight belt holder, and Adamek is coming off an upset win over Chris Arreola, but the winner of this bout would be the first certifiably credible opponent to either Klitschko in quite some time. It would be a fight big enough to bring the Klitschkos and the heavyweight division back into the good graces of HBO, and the American public.

5. Vic Darchinyan vs. Nonito Donaire II: Has it really been three years since Nonito Donaire plastered Vic Darchinyan into the canvas in the seventh round of their flyweight title fight? Darchinyan has reestablished himself since then, while Donaire has fallen out of the spotlight. Both fighters have clamored for a rematch, but for one reason or another it hasn't been hashed out. With both men now campaigning in the bantamweight ranks, and in need of a big money bout, the rematch might finally be on the horizon.

I've given up on #1, but the others are possible. Maybe not in the next six months, but certainly the next 12.
