Top 5 Budget Spring Break Destinations for Hiking!

The Top 5 Spring Break Destinations for Hiking on a Small Budget or for Those Who Just Want to Save Money!

Jason Grant
Hiking is a non traditional Spring Break getaway that is quickly rising in popularity.

Due to the current economic crisis, many are ditching the resorts in search of something different in the backcountry. The world is changing and so are many people's attitudes. Instead of a week long party, many are using their spring break to get and experience new things. And, no, this isn't just the older crowd, the college students are getting in on the action too.

Starting the list off at number 5 we have the California's "High Sierras"; home to Yosemite National Park the area boasts some of the most astonishing sites of North America, including the highest mountain in the contiguous United States. Through my personal experiences of talking to others who have been on the trails at the High Sierras, spring is one of the most beautiful times to find yourself in this area. Starting in the south you can make your way through the giant sequoia trees, venturing north you will find beautiful Lake Tahoe, and a stones throw away from Lake Tahoe, the beautiful purple mountains will gladly greet you. In the lyrics of a song popular in all American elementary schools, "America The Beautiful" by Katharine Lee Bates, the High Sierras are referenced with the phrase, "For purple mountain majesties." If you are interested in a hike into the backcountry, where it's possible to hike for weeks without seeing another soul, California's High Sierras should be a top priority on your Spring Break list. For more information about the High Sierras in California, John Hart is an extremely experienced hiker and inspiring writer who wrote an excellent resource and guide book titled Hiking the Great Basin: The High Desert Country of California, Oregon, Nevada and Utah. The book is unfortunately out of print but used copies are still available at various sites on the internet, including Alibris.

Who said spring break has to be hot? The Himalayas aren't exactly the Bahamas, but for anyone looking for an outdoor getaway few get more beautiful than Nepal's Himalayan Mountains. Their beauty is why this hiking spot makes it to number 4 for this years top Spring Break hiking destinations. One of the most amazing features about the Himalayas is that no one is limited by their hiking ability, even a beginner can enjoy themselves. The Annapurna Circuit is an extremely popular travel route and is one of the most spectacular ways to experience the Himalayas. All along the route you can find local business establishments and resting places; as such, although quite the hike, even the most novice hiker will generally be capable of hiking through this area of the mountains. For the more adventurous or experienced there are other more remote locations that are open for hiking, including Manaslu Circuit, which I have been told is seldom hiked for it can be rather treacherous for the inexperienced.

As it was said, the Himalayas aren't exactly the Bahamas but that doesn't mean it isn't an excellent Spring Break destination for the person searching for something different in an extraordinarily popular place for the time of the year. For most of us, fauna of every color imaginable, birds that look like cereal box characters and iguanas aren't the typical sites of a walk in our local forest, but that all changes once you begin to trek through the beaten, or possibly not so beaten paths, of the Bahamas. Andros Island is one of the most popular destination spots for a hiker in search of the beautiful but not too far off the beaten path. Tours are held often on this island that offer the option of hiking without straying too far off the beaten path. Even though the Bahamas are often overlooked when it comes to hiking, they should not be overlooked when it comes to choosing your hiking spring break.

The runner up to the number one spot isn't for the faint of heart and surely not for the person who is more used to a manicure than getting their hands dirty. The Inca Trail is by far one of the most famous trails that is used today. A long but worthwhile trek will bring you to the ancient and once lost city of Machu Picchu. Although a bus is available to take to the top, that isn't too fun, and it certainly isn't hiking. The trip isn't easy but the trail is well established and rather popular so even the most novice of hiker should feel safe and secure hiking on the Inca Trail. Machu Picchu has the ability to stun and excite almost all with the spectacular view from the top. Due to the accessibility and sheer awe factor of Machu Picchu it makes our list at number two.

After such an amazing previous four contenders for the top spot, as the number one Spring Break hiking spot, its hard to imagine what can take the cake and come out on top. Well, wait no longer, as the number one Spring Break hiking location is the Swiss Alps. Although hiking for Spring Break is obviously something for the more adventurous and those who are willing to get a little dirty, the Swiss have put a luxurious spin on that. If you want quaint, beautiful, and exotic The Swiss Alps are your ticket to an amazing Spring Break. The Alps got their name for the famous cheese dairies located in the region, and it is definitely a draw to any tourist or hiker visiting the area. The Alps offer something for everyone, from the day hiker to the outdoor enthusiast looking to get away. From hiking far into the forest to day hiking from inn to inn it is all available in The Swiss Alps, which is why it gets the number one spot for Spring Break hiking destinations.

Happy Hiking!
