Top 5 Changes for 2007

If I Could Change the World, These Would Top My List

Kristina Jones
Have you ever thought about changing the world? I have for many years. There are too many things needing change in the upcoming year. I have devised my top five changes for 2007, if I could personally change anything I want. Some things are more serious while others are just things I and many of my friends would like to see changed.

5. NCAA Football needs a playoff system.

Yes, you've probably heard this too much this year, but it's true. I cannot tell you how disappointing college football has been this year, especially being a Wisconsin Badger's fan. It is my opinion USC should never have been ranked in the top 10 at the end of the season, let alone be invited to the Rose Bowl with many other teams having better records. Another reason I am in favor a playoff system is the fact Michigan and Florida both deserved a shot (second for Michigan) at Ohio State. Maybe the two teams should have had to duke it out to be in the championship game. Anyways, the BCS needs to disappear from college football or change the rules to allow the top 10 teams BCS Bowl bids, because Wisconsin, Auburn, and Arkansas all deserved to go to a BCS Bowl.

4. Significantly Reduce Gas Prices

Are you tired of gas prices changing too frequently? The oil companies need to begin to lower their prices so we all can enjoy the freedom of traveling without breaking the wallet. This week alone the price of gas went from $2.42 to $2.55 almost overnight here in Washington. I am getting tired of having to pay nearly thirty dollars to fill up my 10 gallon tank. Let's have lower gas prices this year!

3. Stop reporting the latest Paris Hilton scandal and report "real news".

This year was a horrible year trying to read or watch the news. There was always something on television about some celebrity's mishaps or bad behavior. I am not concerned about whose Paris Hilton's latest beef is with or who she is swapping spit with. I want real news, news that matters. I want to know what the average Joe is doing and not those who find themselves in the top 1% of the economy. It's time to change what news is reported and honor the unsung heroes of our country - you and us.

2. Economic Equality

Although the U.S. has come a long way trying to lower the gaps between social classes and men and women, there still remains a significant economic disparity. I would want to change this, particularly for those who work in civil service. The only job which has equal pay for the same job is the military and it depends on your rank. At least it is fair competition. There needs to be some balance between the intensity of the job and the compensation for the job an employee does. There should not be a lower pay rate for women, minorities, or disabled employees. Everyone should get paid the same at every level according to experience. I am tired of seeing so many children whose parents work and the children still have to live in substandard environments because big corporation and Uncle Sam do not care enough to fix this. My motto here would be equal work, equal pay.

1. Changes with the War in Iraq

Everyone knows the war in Iraq is not going as planned. There needs to be some changes so our troops can come back home and have some stability. These young men and women need to be home so they do not have to worry about is today the day. I am tired of not knowing if I will be able to talk to my husband or will he return the same man he was when he left. I know there are hundreds of thousands of other family who feel the same as me. I support Bush, but he needs to listen to the people and let go of his private agenda and bring the troops home.
