5. Pakistan - Though politically unstable, the weak Pakistani Rupee favors the American Dollar, making some things unbelievably cheap. Things such as petrol and meals in restaurants may be equal or more expensive than its American counterpart, but what really makes Pakistan cheap is its real estate. A 4 bedroom house with running water in the urban center of Karachi will only set you back $33,000. Now that's a jaw-dropper.
4. Philippines - 200,000 Americans living in this Asian country cannot be wrong. A taxi ride for about a mile will cost you 20 cents while a haircut will be a whooping 80 cents. The cost of a live in maid for a month? $45. Tuition at a local university for a semester will only cost you a mere $250. The Filipino people all speak perfect English, making the Philippines not only the cheapest country in Asia, but also the most appealing to Americans for it being the only Christian, English-Speaking, tropical Asian nation.
3. Argentina - Recently, Argentina has dropped dramatically in the rankings from being one of the costliest countries in the world to one of the most affordable, due to economic crisis that has plagued this South American nation. Leather goods such as jackets and purses are approximately half of what they cost in the States. A movie ticket? $4. Although real estate may not be as cheap as in the Philippines or Pakistan, the amazingly affordable food and services make up for it.
2. Zimbabwe - Not much is known about this mysterious African country, but that its goods are relatively cheap, thanks to having the world's highest inflation rate at 1,000%. Recently, real estate prices have skyrocketed, but the rapidly dropping value of the Zimbabwean currency balances out. A liter of milk = .84 cents; a kilogram of beef is approximately .60 cents.
1. Paraguay - The cheapest country in the world, according to the Cost of Living Survey conducted by Mercer annually, is the hidden gem of South America, Paraguay. Your monthly rent in your downtown apartment will set you back only $150 and the price for a night at a nice, clean hotel is an astonishing $5. Want more crazy prices? Beer is .60 cents while a meal in a restaurant consisting of salad and steak will cost you $3. Want to live like a king? Your dollars will go the farthest here, giving it the title of Cheapest Country in the World.

I would like to find a place with a tropical climate but just about 10 to 15 degrees f cooler, than the Philippines, with beautiful beaches friendly people and less political strife, with the lowest prices one can find for my Filipina wife and I to live. unfortunately most travel magazines and sites that pretend to list such places actually are talking about places only the richest 5 % can afford. This site seems to be making a genuine attempt to list actual reasonable places to live. and i applaud that.
the site cut off half of what i wrote above, so i saved it and pasted the rest here: I agree that the fellow who unjustly assumed all americans living in the philippines are monsters is misinformed and totally ignorant of the truth. I love the Philippines, but it takes a special kind of individual to live here. one that accepts that while the Filipinos are largely good loving decent people, the occasional one may come along who will end your existence just kasi he doesn't understand you are not a rich foreigner he can exploit. and when those who believe in winning political contests by murder, go on a rampage, you can just as easily become a casualty as innocent Filipinos are, in certain areas. maybe some of us old Soldiers are comfortable in the Philippines because its like the Old West in the USA, and we aren't afraid of it we revel in the freedom and recognize the dangers that come with it.
I'm surprised at all the hostility based on where it is cheap to live. The Philippines used to be extremely cheap when the peso was 6 or 7 to the USD, and in the Philippines spent like dollars in the real world, during VietNam, but somewhere along the way, the prices became based on what Americans were percieved to be able to pay, and the economy ran away so badly that local natives can no longer afford to survive. many things like electronics are now usually old technology but cost 2 or 3 times they cost in the USA for better newer equipment. rent can run from similar to USA prices in reasonable places to sky high in manila. many foods are around half the US price, while some are higher than in the USA. hotels can be much cheaper or much higher. you almost have to check each item you want to buy to see if its cheaper or higher than in the USA. i agree that the fellow who unjustly assumed all americans living in the philippines are monsters is misinformed and totally ignorant o
A 4 bedroom house in karachi will cost u $33,000, i think the writer of this post has never been to Pakistan or karachi, to get a decent house in karachi in a peaceful area u will have to spend atleast $150K and Pakistan is not cheap at all, the prices are pretty much the same as in the states, Petrol here cost almost $1 per litre and Diesel costs $1.10, meat is almost 6 to 7 dollars per Kg, chicken at almost $2 per kg, milk is 90 cents, a dozen eggs cost a $1. I dun knw how this is cheap, the only thing that is cheap in Pakistan is life
Philippines is not a cheap country so dont tell anything to this country.
