Top 5 Computer Speaker Systems for Under $150

Who Says Consumers Must Sacrifice Awesome Audio to Receive a Good Price?

JC Torpey
There is no doubt about it, when someone uses a computer that user wants the best in audio performance he can get for the best price, and with three types of speakers to choose from in addition to the numerous brands, this choice can come at a frustrating pace. While stereo speakers are typically cheaper, some do not offer the sound quality users want. 2.1 speakers are the same as stereo speaker systems but also include a subwoofer and surround sound is a set of five to seven speakers that surround the room as the name suggests.

So that leaves the question, which are the best brands of computer speakers available today? For the sake of ease, let us look at five of the best computer speaker brands available in the stereo or 2.1 department. These five speaker systems offer the best compromise between decent audio performance and affordability; all cost less than $150.

Logitech Z-5 $80 to $100

At only $80, the Logitech Z-5 PC speaker system is a set that performs decently for the relatively low price. This set is compatible with both Windows and Mac computer systems and they have built in USB connectivity. The right speaker weighs more than the left because it is where the subwoofer is located, although they are a little lighter than one would expect. They are omnidirectional speakers, meaning that they cover a wide variety of angles and surrounding sound at many frequencies.

The Logitech Z-5 uses only a USB cable and an Installation CD to set them up, although there is no power adapter to clutter the outlets. On the remote control user has a "musical note button" on which the user assigns their media player of choice, such as Windows Media or iTunes. The only downfalls are the fact that there is no volume control on the speakers themselves and the bass quality could be a bit deeper. These speakers are available on Amazon.com and from Logitech's website.

Altec Lansing Expressionist Bass FX3022-$114 to $130

Altec happens to be one of the better brands of speaker systems especially when it comes to gamin, and these are no exception. Offering this set for about $120, the capability for producing striking bass tones is exceptional for the price. However, the treble is brassy and is not a good choice for listening to movies. The speakers themselves stand at 10 inches tall and uses a 1.5 inch driver in addition to 4-inch sub woofers built into the base of teach speaker. On the top of the right speaker is where the volume and power buttons are located.

This set does not come with a remote control, which is unlike most modern PC speaker systems. A 3.5mm mini jack cable is included to connect the speakers to the computer in addition to the six feet of cable connecting the speakers to each other. These speakers present excellent audio quality for gamers and movie lovers, but do not plan on listening to music with them unless you like overly aggressive treble with the pounding bass they produce. These Altec speakers are available from Amazon.com and Alreclansing.com.

Logitech LS21 22.1 Stereo Speaker System-$29 to $50

Another Logitech system, this 2.1 stereo speaker set for computers offers great sound while still keeping it under budget; in fact, these speakers cost less than $50. The system offers users a balanced audio experience, with one large subwoofer and two satellite speakers that work together to offer the user a great bass experience while balancing out the treble. In addition to a remote control, the speaker system connects using a 3.5 mm audio jack.

The downfall; there are cables everywhere. The satellite speakers plug into the subwoofer and the subwoofer plugs into the computer, too many wires make for a frustrating setup; however, for under $30 and, in most cases, under $30, users cannot ask for a better compromise between great audio and a decent price; available at Amazon.com and Logitech.com.

Creative Inspire S2 Wireless-$149 to $160

Just at the $150 limit, these computer speakers form Creative offer exceptional wireless audio for a relatively budget friendly price. The tiny satellite speakers are perfectly angled to offer great sound that is directed upwards to hear it better. The subwoofer is twice the size of the satellite speakers are and it offers a full range of bass notes while not compromising the treble or high frequency sounds.

However, when streaming audio at higher volumes, the distortion emitted is typical of Bluetooth systems. With this computer speaker system, complete wireless is not the case. Wires connect the satellites to the subwoofer; only the system is wireless to the PC using Bluetooth. This system is available at Creative's online store and at Amazon, among other websites.

Creative Labs GigaWorks T20W Series II-$100 to $130

Available at $129 from the Creative online store and Amazon for less, this speaker system leaves a lot to be desired in the looks department. Far from a sleek exterior, the audio performance makes up for its lack in good looks. Its BasXPort technology offers astounding bass quality at very low frequencies and distortion is rarely a problem. A front panel for volume, bass and treble controls in addition to a headphone jack offers easy access to the main features. This is a true wireless system, so any interference between the audio source and the speakers will limit usability. The range depends on this interference but they will generally work for up to 50 feet away or more. These compute speakers are available from Creative and Amazon.com, among other stores.

These systems all offer the best in audio while using wired, wireless and combination styles. One thing is common between all systems, they all cost less than $150, which is the typical budget of consumers purchasing speakers for computers. No matter which of these systems a consumer chooses, they never have to sacrifice again.

I've been telling myself that I'm going to buy computer speakers for years. I eventually bought Denon ADH2000 headphones with a $50 headphone amp. Still might get me some logitechs in the future.

Excellent article! I use a small Cambridge Soundworks speaker system that's now hooked to its third computer... I bought it in 1999 for about $40. It's awesome!
