Top 5 Craigslist Tips and Tricks

Make the Most Out of the 7th Most Popular Website on the Internet

Lynn Glessner
Craigslist was started in 1995 by a guy named, not surprisingly, Craig ... Craig Newmark. Craigslist incorporated as a for-profit corporation in 1999, although they remain true to their initial vision of providing a trustworthy, efficient, relatively non-commerical place for folks to find all the basics in their local area. Craigslist generated revenue by charging businesses below-market rates for help wanted ads in SF, NYC and LA, and for broker apartment listings in NYC.

There are lots of goodies to be found on the craigslist site, in addition to second-hand merchandise. After you are done browsing all the offerings, reading and posting in the forums, and maybe even buying a t-shirt, check out these 5 tips and tricks.

1. Create an account
It is not required that you have an account, but there are several benefits. Posting is much simplified, because you don't need to wait for an email and then confirm that you want to submit the posting. You can also easily view and edit anything you have listed, and view old postings you have made.

2. Go straight to your city
Craigslist offers listings for over 300 cities in all 50 states and over 50 countries. To go straight to the listings for your city (or nearest major metropolitan area) instead of the "www" use your city name to go straight to craigslist section for your area. For example, my nearest major city is Seattle, so I go to http://seattle.craigslist.org

3. Include pictures in your for sale posting
You may not notice this option, but when you create the listing there is a button for "Add/Edit Images". All you need is to have the files on your computer or digital camera. Craigslist will upload them and keep a copy of your pictures for as long as the posting is active. If you don't have a picture, some buyers will ask, but most will just go on to the next listing.

4. Check out the "best of craiglist" postings
Look along the left-hand frame for a best-of link, or go straight to http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/all/. These are user-nominated posts that are interesting, funny, or just plain crazy. They are not endorsed by craigslist, and may not be appropriate for children (or adults).

5. Read Craig's blog. Yes, that Craig.
Craig's blog is located at http://www.cnewmark.com/ and is not dedicated simply to the craigslist service. He uses this space to pontificate (his word) about whatever is on his mind. This makes for reading of the most interesting kind.

CraigGuard.com is a place for you to report your experiences from Craigslist.org. Similar to eBay's rating system, CraigGuard enables you to search a buyer or seller before you start a transaction with them. It also allows you to promote Internet safety by creating descriptive reports about buyers or sellers you have encountered on Craigslist.org.
CraigGuard can be your place to shine as a reliable seller or it could be a powerful tool in outing those who don't play nicely online; bad check writers, scammers, and even dangerous criminals.

I think pics are super important for 100% of items you are selling. Services maybe not so much. But one huge way to stand out is to use a more eye-catching ad. There are a bunch of sites out there that can help you make ads for craigslist. I found http://www.slipdex.com. This one is FREE, allows up to 5 pics, has tons of themes specific for different categories and gives you different template options. Even has a thing that lets you track your ad views for craigslist. I have sold several things using it and you do get more responses!
