Top 5 DVD's to Watch While Travelling

Keeping the Children Quiet!!

Kris Ruddy
The rise of technology in our lives is truly amazing. My childhood years were spent listening to the radio (for free) and watching 2 channels on television (for free). My weekly allowance was spent on buying 45 rpm records and saving up to buy an album. I started babysitting when I was 10 years old so I usually had a nice chunk of change to spend. (Most of the time I spent my allowance and saved my babsitting money). Now we pay for listening to the radio and watching cable TV.

We were living in Wyoming when we got our first VHS tape player. Our oldest daughter was around 5 years old at the time. Dan and I were trying to set the player to record and we were reading the book and trying to find which buttons did what. Becky (the 5 year old) came over and pushed her way between us and started punching the buttons. Within minutes the thing was set up to record. Amazing! Our child is a genius! Wow! When our youngest child was born CD's were known as Certificates of Deposit and they were offered at financial institutions only. Now we're listening to CD's and watching movies on DVD's and something called Blue Ray. Sheesh!

Once again, I asked my eldest what movies she would watch and I asked that question with some hesitantcy. When Becky was in labor with my youngest granddaughter she had the hospital set up a DVD player and a television so she could watch her favorite movies. The hospital obliged and Becky asked me to bring her one of her favorite movies, "Silence of the Lambs." I don't like blood and gore, so I have never watched this movie. I brought "Silence of the Lambs" and other movies like "Splash", "9 to 5", and "The Incredible Shrinking Woman".
These are movies Becky watched growing up. I left the room when she started watching "Silence of the Lambs". At one point the nurse came in and asked Becky to please turn the tv down because the screams on the movie were disturbing the other patients in the hospital.

So, even with Beck's warped (maybe different is a nicer word) sense of what is fun and what is not--I dared to ask her what DVD's to watch on a road trip and she told me:

BEST DVD's TO WATCH (according to my oldest daughter)

Which I guess depends on how old the children are.....

1. The Goonies

2. Finding Nemo

3. Sword in the Stone

4. Looney Tunes

5. Cars

The movies, I think they're the good ones...in my taste. But some of the movies I watched growing up most kids NOW days wouldn't know what the heck they are....9 to 5, Incredible Shrinking Woman, like that...and when you're in a car, it's only proper to watch Cars.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at the nice list. I would also include:
1. The Little Mermaid
2. Black Beauty
3. The Sound of Music (remember they're in the car and can't walk away!)
4. Hatari (A John Wayne movie which shows catching wild animals in Africa. I really like this movie).
5. The Magic School Bus DVD's

If each child has their own DVD player with ear phones then they don't fight and might even fall asleep! We, as a society, have come a ways from when we all had to agree on what to listen to because there was only a radio in the car. Growing up in Glendive meant listening to KXGN or KFYR in Bismarck, North Dakota. Then, OMG!! we got an FM station which played country music! At night we had a lot of other choices and even listened to KOMA which is in Oklahoma City, OK.

Many years ago, I was driving with our youngest daughter and I had the radio set to a local AM station. (We were then living in Wyoming). I could tell by how the sky looked that a storm was coming and I was just trying to beat the storm home. In the distance Rachel and I saw a lightning strike and at the same time, the radio crackled. Rachel's eyes got huge and she said, "MOM, did you hear the lightning on the radio?" I just smiled and agreed. It was totally a new experience to her that you could "hear" lightning on the radio.
