Top 5 Easy Ways to Clean Bathroom Grout and Tiles

Easy Tips for Making Your Bathroom Tiles and Grout Look like New

M.G. Hardiman
There's nothing worse than grout that's outlived its purpose, or has it? Maybe your grout problems stem from dirt and grime and not wear, tear and old age? If you suspect your bathroom tiles and grout need a redo, check out these top 5 easy ways to clean bathroom grout and tiles.

Clean Grout Tip 1. Go Green. There are any number of home remedies or products on the market today that will help you steer clear of heavy chemicals and dyes. Try diluted solutions of white vinegar, lemon juice or baking soda as a first line to keep your bathroom tub, tiles and grout looking like new. These products are particularly safe solutions if you have kids and pets in the home. As for commercial products or big jobs, check out Green Works and Eco Green.

Clean Grout Tip 2. Hydrogen Peroxide. Fill a spray bottle with ½ hydrogen peroxide and ½ water. Keep home-made cleaning solution on hand to keep mold and mildew from growing on your bathroom tiles and grout. Hydrogen peroxide is safer to use than chlorine bleach or ammonia based products. And, it's cheaper.

Clean Grout Tip 3. Electric Toothbrush. As silly as this sounds, keeping your grout clean can be as easy as 1-2-3 by using an electric toothbrush on the toughest stains and areas. Just don't let anyone catch you cleaning the floor with your electric toothbrush or you'll probably have some explaining to do.

Clean Grout Tip 4. Deep Clean and Color Seal. Either do it yourself or consult the experts at Home Depot , Lowes or This Old Grout, to name a few. This process gets to the heart of the problem, strips the tile floor of any dirt and grim and allows you to seal in the tiles' original color and grout or go with another color altogether. Not only does it restore your dirty old tiles and grout, it makes them stain proof going forward.

Clean Grout Tip 5. Steam Clean. Either do it yourself or call the experts from Stanley Steamer to get rid of the stubborn dirt and grime that just can't be lifted any other way.

Great suggestions. I saw an infomercial about a steam cleaner that does grout. Also read about a solution of tea tree oil and white vinegar to stop mould and grout grot. All these suggestions are great and I will start using them. Why pay big bucks for chemicals that smell horrible and pollute our waterways.

I had some especially nasty mildew stains on the grout around my bathtub that would not come out with the nicer and greener methods. Finally, I couldn't stand it anymore and I attacked it with a Bleach Pen (the one they make for laundry)--the gel stayed put and I let it soak there for quite a while until I wiped it off. Not the most environmentally friendly thing to wash down the drain, but I don't have to look at the black ick anymore when I take a shower.
