Top 5 Facts About Penguins

Bridget Ilene Delaney
Penguins are considered to be cute animals by many people. They are definitely considered interesting animals by most people. These things are obvious from the amount of movies and games featuring penguins. There's even a children's on-line gaming community called Club Penguin. Here are facts about penguins.

Give a Penguin a Margarita

Don't really give a penguin a margarita. Don't give a penguin a virgin margarita, either. The reason that this was put is because of the salt put around the rim or a margarita. Penguins don't live near sources of fresh drinking water. They only live near salt water. Because of this, penguins have special glands that push the salt out of grooves in their bills.

Love, Penguin Style, Is Painful

You've heard that saying, "love hurts." Penguins take this to a new level. While there are some sweet thin that happen, such as penguins making noises that are considered "singing" to recognize each other and staying together as long as they have chicks, penguins also slap each other on the backs to bond.

Penguin Bounce

Penguin Bounce is a game, but that's not why it is a headline here. Rockhopper penguins bounce. They get their name because they look like they are hopping on the rocks. However, it is said that in order to find the perfect ledges on rocks, they bounce from ledge to ledge, like Tigger from Winnie-the-Pooh.

Crying Penguins

Crying penguins is nothing like crying wolf. Penguin babies actually cry, or at least make noise. They start making noise the minute they hatch. This way the mother knows her own baby. The mother can leave the baby in a group of other babies to go hunting for food. When the mother returns with food, she knows her baby from the sound that it makes.

It's Not All Work

Penguins do have a lot of work to do. They protect themselves from predators. They hunt. They hatch eggs and take care of their young. However, penguins also make sure that they have fun. Penguins surf when it is windy by catching waves under their feet. They also toboggan by sliding down snowy hills on their bellies.
