Top 5 Fighting Games Ever

Where Does Your Favorite Fighter Rank? Does it Rank at All?

Over the last 15 years or so, we've seen a huge amount of fighting games. Mainly in the arcade where they became the most famous Fighting games are the games you would skip school to go to the arcade and play. There have been some bad, there have been some good, there have been some great. But there have also been the ones that are better then great, the ones that really influenced the genre for the better. This is what that list is for. It's for those top 5 fighters that were not only great, but groundbreaking and bringing in many newcomers into the fighting game genre.

5. Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New age of Heroes(DC)
Spiderman, Wolverine, and The Incredible Hulk vs. Ken, Ryu and T. Bonne. Don't expect to find this fight anywhere else except this game (series). This game had to be one of the best arcade fighters since Street Fighter II. You've got the chance to pit over 50 characters against each other, from two great companies in Capcom and Marvel, It just doesn't get any better then that. It's exciting fast paced 3 vs.3 gameplay, and simple control scheme, made it easy to pick and play this game, but very difficult to master. That's how you make great fighters.

4. Super Smash Bros. Melee(GC)
Arguably the best "party game" of all time. This game gave more sleepless nights for my friends and I then most likely, any other game. Super Smash is a helluva drug. The game was deep, it had great graphics, it was fun. I mean how enjoying is it to beat the crap out of Jigglypuff? It's very different from the traditional fighting game, with your goal being to get your opponents percentage up and knock him off the map, and being that it was 4 players, instead of 2. This was very much welcomed though. Especially when you were able to pick so many characters from Nintendo's history, such as Mario, Link, and Picachu. It was a very simple concept, as with the controls that made it easy to play, but it also made it so that it was difficult to master. Which is why it was so great, and the best selling game for the gamecube. Many games have since then tried to duplicate the Super Smash bros. formula, unfortunately though, none of those games have been able to compare.

3. Street Fighter II (SNES)
Many hardcore fighting gamers cite this as the greatest fighting game of all time. It was the game to play in the arcades, It's influence seems present in every fighting game to date. It introduced new concepts, such as the combo which would be used in most fighting games then on. It's ultra-responsive controls and it's great depth, help make it one of the greates

2. Tekken 3 (PS)
At a time, this was the only game I would play on the playstation, attempting to master every move for every character, in my quest for video game dominance. And I never got bored of it. I might go and play it right now to see if I still remember all of Jin's moves.

Definitely one of the best Playstation games ever. This game was just amazing. . It pushed the limits of the playstation graphically. It's music and sound were terrific overall. It had a surprisingly good story for a fighting game. And it's depth and extra modes really kept you interested. The only gripe people probably had with it, was a character that shall remain nameless who did some kind of break dance fighting that some felt was "cheap". Other than that, there was no flaw in this game. And it definitely deserves it's place in history as one of the best fighting games, and one of the best playstation titles ever.

1. Soul Calibur (DC)
This is the greatest fighting game ever. Whether you played it in the arcades or if you played it on the dreamcast (RIP) you know how great this game was. The unique weapon based combat was refreshing from the typical fighting games we were used to. The music and graphics were beautifully done. And the gameplay was amazing. This game was definitely not your typical fighting game where you could "button mash" your way through. Especially if you were going against a decently skilled player. The characters were done great, and were surprisingly balanced in the game. It's been 7 years since it's release and a fighting game still hasn't topped it.

So there you have it. The top 5 fighting games ever. You may not agree with the list. But if you are a true gamer, you should be able to agree that all of these games were great in their own right, and influenced the fighting game world, by bringing something different, or just damn great to the table.
