First person shooters, since the first ones made their way into gamers' hands, have been one of the most popular forms of gaming. They are easy enough for almost anyone to pick up and provide fun and exciting gameplay that other genres just can't compete with. Since their invention, many FPS games have made their way onto the shelves, but these five make it to the top for being excellent and influential.

1. Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64) 2000

This game, a spiritual sequel to the popular Goldeneye 007 also for the N64, was created to imitate the game engine of Goldeneye but with a whole host of new weapons and an engaging alien-futuristic themed storyline. The game included an impressive multiplayer mode that allowed you to play with three of your friends and also add in up to eight computer simulants. The result is an almost limitless number of fun game scenarios to play. This game deserves a spot on a list of best FPS video games.

2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360, Playstation 3) 2007

The first Call of Duty to move from the World Wars into modern day combat was an instant hit because of its intense gaming experience and realism. Highly realistic levels, limitless mutiplayer options, a large number of different weapons, and a leveling up system make this game both fun and addictive enough to make a list of amazing FPS video games.

3. Goldeneye 007 (Nintendo 64) 1997

Considered the first of the great FPS video games, this video game introduced an entire generation to the joys of shooting up bad guys while completing missions. Future James Bond video games were unable to capture the fun of this game; only Perfect Dark managed to get it right. This video game is so influential that most gamers of a certain generation immediately think of it when they hear the term first person shooter. With its large number of guns, excellent level designs, and multiplayer mode, Goldeneye holds a prime position as one of the greats.

4. Halo (Xbox) 2001

Not only do we owe a lot to Halo as one of the most influential FPS games out there, but Xbox itself owes the game for legitimizing the system as one that be a host for great games. As a flagship of Xbox gaming, Halo has been able to pull a lot of gamers away from Playstation and Nintendo, who originally held the gamer attentions before Xbox came into the game. Halo brought back the magic in first person shooters that hadn't really been seen since Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with its host of interesting weapons and engaging storyline. The sequels also continued to wow gamers.

5. Half Life 2 (Xbox 360, Playstation 3) 2004

Six years after the original Half Life, this game was released to rabid fans and they weren't disappointed with what they found. The game had an intensely in-depth storyline that went beyond anything that had come before it. The game was hugely influential in many ways, from the physics engine, to the host of weapons, to the design of levels. Half Life 2 is responsible for the idea of the story-heavy FPS, a previously unheard of idea.
