Attend Free Festivals
Sure, not every festival is free. But, some of the best ones are! Check your local newspaper or look online to find the best festivals in your area. If you do opt to go to a free festival be careful. Some of them depend on making money through refreshments, rides, etc.
The best festivals to attend where you won't need to spend money include those that involve music and the theater. I love finding free jazz and oldies concerts. Bring your own chair and some snacks and you could spend hours listening to the band and socializing with those around you.
Visit Your Local Park
Most communities have local parks that don't require an entrance fee. Look for parks that have hiking, fishing, and other activities that your family will enjoy. Some also have free programs and lectures. You may opt to bring a picnic lunch, but if the food comes out of your existing grocery budget then it is still a cost effective way to have fun without spending much.
Go to the Beach!
If you live close to the ocean or a lake, try going to the beach. Some beaches are completely free, others do require a fee. Most of the beaches I've been to haven't required any money so there are plenty to choose from.
Bring a picnic lunch and plenty of sunscreen and your family will be amused for hours going in the water, playing in the sand, reading, and playing games like volleyball and Frisbee. Plus, this is about as "summer" as you can get!
Local Library Programs
Check with your local library to see what kinds of programs they are running for the kids. Some of them offer a summer reading program and throw a big party at the end of the summer. The library programs are usually free. Libraries in larger communities will also have some offerings for adults such as book clubs, lectures, and crafts programs.
Free Museum Days
If there are a lot of museums in your area call them. Some of them may offer free admission all the time. Others may offer one free day a week. This is a great way to expose your family to some culture and history. If you have kids, look for museums that are interactive and hands on or that offer tours geared towards children.
You don't need to spend money to have fun during the summer. It is possible to enjoy summer vacation on a budget.
