Top 5 Funniest Families on TV

Michelle M. Guilbeau
Watching funny sitcoms on television can be the highlight of a TV viewer's week. There are many funny families on television, some of the funniest families can be found on the Spring TV shows.

Choosing funny families on the current sitcoms was not easy for me but I have narrowed down my top 5 Funniest Families on TV.

The New Adventures of Old Christine

CBS-Wednesday/8 pm Eastern Time

Old Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Richard (Clark Gregg), Matthew (Hamish Linklater), Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon), New Christine (Emily Rutherfurd), Marly (Tricia O'Kelley), Lindsay (Alex Kapp Horner), Barb (Wanda Sykes)

Christine is a divorced Mom who lives with her son Ritchie and her brother Matthew. Christine's ex-husband Richard who is Ritchie's father is around quite a bit in Christine's life but Richard has a girlfriend also named Christine. Hence the reason the divorced Christine is called "Old Christine".

This sitcom family is so funny to me because of all the absurd dynamics between the characters. Old Christine can be self-absorbed and obsessive at times, she has bad luck with relationships and even married her best friend Barb when Barb was possibly going to be deported. Each character seems to have their personal issues and the craziness of it all makes for a hilarious sitcom.

My Name is Earl

NBC-Thursday/7 pm Central Time

Earl (Jason Lee), Joy (Jaime Pressly), Randy (Ethan Suplee), Darnell (Eddie Steeples), Catalina (Nadine Velazquez)

Earl's quest to set all the wrongs he did in his life right makes for one of the funniest sitcoms I have watched. Earl and Joy are ex-spouses but Joy is now married to Darnell who is one of Earl's best friends, Earl and Darnell stayed best friends even though Darnell and Joy became pregnant while Joy was still married to Earl. Randy is Earl's younger brother and Catalina is married to Randy although their marriage is due to a green card issue. The interrelationships are enough to be funny! None of the family members are very bright but they all seem to manage to get by in life and seem to have a lot of fun along the way.

Two and a Half Men

CBS-Monday/ 9 pm Eastern Time

Charlie Harper (Charlie Sheen), Alan Harper (Jon Cryer), Jake Harper (Angus T. Jones), Evelyn Harper (Holland Taylor), Judith Harper (Marin Hinkle), Berta (Conchata Ferrell)

Charlie Harper is a well to do divorcee who used to be married to Judith but Judith has neurotic issues which makes life more complicated. Alan is Charlie's brother and Jake is Charlie's son, both Alan and Jake live with Charlie. Three males in the house make for some hilarious laughs, thrown into the comedy is Evelyn, who is Charlie and Alan's overbearing Mother. Berta, the housekeeper for Charlie, Alan and Jake also adds humor to the funny cast of characters.

Hannah Montana

Disney Channel-Everyday/6:30 pm Central Time

Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus), Lilly Truscott/Lola (Emily Osment), Oliver Oken/Mike Standley III (Mitchel Musso), Jackson Stewart (Jason Earles), Robby Stewart (Billy Ray Cyrus), Rico (Moises Arias)

Miley Stewart is an average teenage girl by day but then at night goes by the identity of Hannah Montana, a famous singer. Miley Stewart, Lilly and Oliver are all best friends. Jackson is Miley's brother and Robby is Miley's Dad. Rico and Jackson are constantly harassing each other but they are friends deep down inside. While there seems to be Hannah Montana mania every where and not everyone is a fan of Hannah Montana, the antics that go on between the Stewart family and friends is pretty funny. A lot of kids find the family and show very funny so it would be only fair to place the show on a list of funniest families on TV.

Everybody Hates Chris

The CW-Friday/7 pm Central Time

Chris (Tyler James Williams), Rochelle (Tichina Arnold), Julius (Terry Crews), Drew (Tequan Richmond), Tonya (Imani Hakim), Greg (Vincent Martella)

Chris Rock is the narrator of this sitcom and it is based on his experiences growing up in New York in the 80's. Chris moves to a new neighborhood, tries to manage his younger brother, Drew and his younger sister, Tonya. Chris' parents, Rochelle and Julius are working hard at their jobs. Chris also struggles with life as a junior high student. Everyday issues for Chris are funny, the show is really hilarious and was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award and People's Choice Award.

The Spring TV Shows will be sure to bring laughter to viewers, the funniest families on television vary in the makeup of the family dynamics. Some of the sitcoms are more appropriate for the entire family and some may be more appropriate to adult humor. Regardless, the funniest families on TV will make you laugh!
