Top 5 Funny Halloween Costumes

Funny Halloween Costumes

Catherine Spencer
You'll say "Yabba Dabba Do!" to my top five (actually, six) funny Halloween costumes...The Flintstones! These classic cartoon characters make for a great group of costumes that will make everyone who sees you laugh. Part of the fun is finding a group of adults who are size appropriate to the Flintstones. A few years ago my son and his wife, along with four of their friends, went to a party that had a cartoon theme. We got together one evening and made all of the costumes in a matter of hours. They are easy to make, even if you can't sew!

Fred Flintstone was the perfect character for my son...he's a big guy! I made his outfit from a light brown fleece with black felt spots glued onto his tunic. For the tunic, measure the length needed from the neck to the knees, double the material, and fold in half. Then cut a hole in the center of the material ( where it's folded in half) for the neck of the tunic. Make sure it is large enough for his head to fit through. Next, you can either sew the sideseams or use fabric glue. Cut the bottom of the tunic in a V-shaped border. Fred's tie was made from a left-over length of Betty's blue fleece dress. Cut it jagged on the edges, long enough to go around the neck and then tied like a real tie. My son let his beard grow out a little to give him the "Fred" caveman look and he wore sandals on his feet.

My daughter-in-law went to the party dressed as Wilma. Her dress was made from white fleece. We made it the same as Fred's tunic. Just measure the length that your person needs and follow the directions above. The only difference is that you need to make the dress cover only one shoulder. "Wilma" wore her long hair in a bun and wore a strand of very large pearl-like beads to match those of her character. Sandals on her feet completed the Wilma costume.

One of their short friends went as Barney Rubble. We made his tunic from dark brown fleece and cut a deep V at the neck. Then we cut small slits in the material and laced a rawhide shoe lace through the slits. He also grew out his beard just enough to give him the primitive caveman look and wore sandals.

His wife portrayed Betty wearing a light blue fleece dress that was made like Wilma's dress. She wore a large necklace at her neck, a pretty bow in her hair, and sandals on her feet.

Bamm Bamm was a 6'4" friend who made a hilarious baby! His toga was easy to make-just wrap the material around the waist and cut where it fits. Sew the sideseams. Then fold down the material at the waist to make a 1" casing and insert elastic to fit the person. The elastic can be sewn, or pinned with a large safety pin. It will be hidden in the casing anyways. Next, you need to cut a shoulder strap that helps to hold up the toga. Sew the strap in place in front and back of the toga. Bamm Bamm carried a caveman club that you can find at any Halloween shop.

Even though this article is supposed to include my top 5 funny Halloween costumes, it just wouldn't be right to leave out little Pebbles! For her outfit, cut a short top at an angle on the sideseams so that it flares out like a baby-doll top. Sew the sideseams and cut the hem in the same V-shaped border as the other costumes. Our Pebbles wore a pair of shorts for her bottoms. With her hair in a little ponytail on top of her head she looked so sweet. A bone in the ponytail will top off the outfit!

These Flintstones costumes are some of the easiest that I've ever made, since you don't have to hem them or be real fussy to make them look great. Fleece material is easy to work with, quite cheap to buy and gives the look ot fur, which you want for cavemen. We used some Flintstones cartoons to refer to which really helped us. Have fun with these top six funny Halloween costumes!
