Top 5 Gas-Powered String Trimmers

Brian Jones
When it's time to trim your lawn, a regular mower cannot always get where you need it to go. In these cases, it's time for a string trimmer. Formerly known as the "weed whacker" a string trimmer cuts grasses and weeds with a rapidly rotating thin plastic cord at the base of a long hand held pole and trigger system. While there are electric versions, I have never recommended anything electric to do yard work. The gasoline powered string trimmers will provide you the best quality and most power. That being said, here are the top 5 gas powered string trimmers on the market:

Troy-Bilt String Trimmer 41BDT20C966

This 17-inch cut span model features a 31 cc 2-cycle clutched engine and a curved shaft for easy maneuvering. It has a spring loaded starting system and an adjustable handle. It weighs only 16.3 lbs and sells for $136.99.

Poulan Pro PP125

Ryobi ZR30002
The Ryobi gets the job done. The ZR30002 features an 18-inch cut span, 30cc 1.0HP engine with dual piston rings and chrome-plated cylinder, straight shaft, anti-vibration handle, and accepts expandable attachments (not included) for a pruner, edger, blower, tiller, brush cutter, and hedge trimmer. www.amazon.com is selling refurbished units now for only $89.99.

Weed Eater FeatherLite FLSST25
Weed Eater is the standard for the string trimmer. You cannot go wrong with this model and it weighs only 8.3 lbs. It features a 17-inch cut span, 25cc High-Output engine with gear drive, dual-line cutting head, straight shaft, 10-second spool replacement and is EPA and C.A.R.B. compliant. It sells for $109.99.

Craftsman String Trimmer 79182
If you shop at Sears, then you know the durability of the Craftsman name. This string trimmer features a 17-inch cut span, 25 cc engine, curved shaft, adjustable handle, and weighs in at 15.5 lbs. It sells for $89.99 at www.sears.com.

For all your trimming needs, whether it's just grass in tight places, edging work, or overgrown fences one of these models will do you right., Of these 5, the Poulan is my machine of choice for heavier jobs. The Weed Eater is perfect for lighter jobs or those who need something a little easier on the arms. Most of these models can be bought online at www.amazon.com with the exception of the Craftsman.
